Milling SC Flywheel

I am in the process of renewing the clutch system on my SC. The contact surface on the flywheel is glazed and shows cracks from overheating. The cracks run from the center towards the outside of the flywheel (across the surface). I plan to turn the flywheel on a lathe to renew the surface. How much material can I safely remove from the flywheel surface and still have a workable clutch?

Yes, I will be replacing the clutch and pressure plate along with the TO bearing and the pilot bushing.

The proper way to reface the flywheel is to GRIND it as even with a carbide cutter it will skip over the hard spots and tooling marks are not the proper surface for the clutch disc. And only take off what is needed for a smoothes surface don't worry about the heat cracks unless your planning to run the engine over 3000 RPM.

I did a SMTA clutch on my lathe. It was an easy job. You will probably find that there will be dime sized hard spots all over the surface. If you take off .030-040 you will probably be able to remove them. If you take off any less, you will have a mess that looks like scrambled eggs. If the flywheel has a step where the pressure plate bolts, take the same depth on that surface to assure proper tension of the clutch springs.
