I have a SW4 that I have been working on. I converted it to 12 volts neg ground. It has a new starter switch , voltage regulator , the generator converted to 12 volts, Ect... all new parts.
The problem I"m having and can"t solve is when I engage the starter all the levers ,gas line or anything metal thats touching another piece of metal sparks. The tractor once started runs fine but I also noticed its not charging either.I know somthings not right . I"ve spent hours checking all connections and wires but seem to find nothing wrong.
I sure could use some help maybe someone else has had the same problem.

Thanks for any advice you can give

ED J

The issue is a failed ground. To solve it the following may provide insight. The battery ground strap comming from the negative terminal should be attached to the clutch housing (torque tube). There are several threaded locations suitable for this attachment. The cable end terminal should have a 3/8" hole in it. Use a tap and clean the threads in the hole in the housing. Use 100 grit paper and clean the surface of the housing where the ground strap will attach till it is bright cast iron. Use a new bolt (short enough to not bottom in the casting) with a new flat washer under the head to bolt the cable to the casting.
The starting energy now has only a short path to get to the starter motor. (I'll bet it is now grounded to the steering wheel brackets, and they are not adequately grounded, because of paint or rust or unknown gaskets). Poor ground will also cause charging problems. Though this may eliminate the sparking, other issues may be causing the charging problem. One step at a time.
Keep us informed on the forum so we can gain from the solution.

Thanks for the response Jim. I will give this a try in the morning. My present location is a stud that sticks up from the clutch cover. You are correct its not the cleanest site as I do recall paint being there. The previous location which I changed when I did the modifications was the engine block, but this is incorrect for this tractor. The stud is what I believe is the factory site for the ground.

Check back as I will keep you posted on my progress.

Thanks again
ED
