Alternator on a Farmall MD

I have a GM alternator mounted on my MD. To get it to start charging I have to activate the field? by flipping a toggle switch. I did not do the wiring and was wondering if it is possible to eliminate this toggle switch in the system. If so how may I go about doing this. Any help is welcome.

I'd leave well enough alone. It seems those one wire alternators put a drain on the system if they are hooked direct. It is worh a little inconvienence to not have a dead battery. I been running my M for 12 years with a toggle switch.

It works now so I think that I will just leave it be. Just relocate the switch so that it is in an easier position to see and not forget about. Thanks for all the help.

Indeed Cowman - thanks for the reminder!

Single wire units place a small amount of drain on the battery when stopped. Not an issue if you run the engine frequently. But if you let a single wire alternator equipped engine sit idle for a couple months or longer, most single wire units will flatten a good battery unless the ground cable is disconnected.

Brad, its sure easier to automatically (no toggle switch needed) excite say a GM 10 SI alternator (what you have???) if you had a pure gas engine as Bob n myself n many others have told or drawn how to for a long time, cuz you have that ready made source of 12 volt excitation just sitting there on the Ignition switch when ON already. But you turn off the ignition after she starts on gas grrrrr rrrr

I have seen guys use GM 10 SI alternators on diesels and they excited them by running a hot wire to some sort of a normally open oil pressure activated switch (think thats what they use) that closes upon oil pressure. They take the switched output from the Normally Open oil pressure switch with a 10 ohm resistor to the lil No. 1 terminal on the side of the alternator to excite it. The lil No 2. terminal, of course, wires direct to the alternator output.

I'm not sure if the Delco works the same way as my Hitachi alternator, but I ran a wire from the ignition switch to an idiot light to the "B" terminal on the alternator as I recall. The power runs through the idiot light to the alternator to excite it, and the idiot light automatically goes out when the alternator starts charging.

Nat - The Hitachi indeed works like the Delco. However since the MD is a diesel with mechanical fuel injection, there is no "ignition switch" to turn the engine on and off. Thus the need for a separate manual switch, oil pressure switch or similar if you want to run a Delco 3 wire alternator. ...Bob

Brad - You can convert your existing alternator yourself. Simply swap the existing regulator inside the alternator for a "single wire" regulator. Your local starter/alternator shop should have the regulator.

Be aware however when single wired an alternator will need to be spun up to higher RPM at startup to get it to begin charging. On a slow turning engine like the MD you may find you'll have to change to a smaller pulley to make the alternator spin fast enough to energize at startup.

A simpler option may be to stick with the 3 wire setup and install a normally open oil pressure switch on the engine (switch contacts close on dectecting oil pressure). Run a wire from the alternator BAT terminal, through the pressure switch, and back to the alternator #2 terminal and you'll be good to go.

There should be a way to convert it to a one wire system. Your local alternator repair shop can do it.
