I used the tractor this summer to level out a floor in my shed. Two months later I got to start it up and move it out and the clutch won't engage. I am a new ower and do not have any manuals. Are their things I can look for, is the clutch hydraulic and low on fluid? Thanks BEN

Above and beyond what others have suggested, I would highly recommend that you get a reproduction owner's manual, and an I&T service manual for your tractor, at the very least. You're setting yourself up for a big repair bill or worse, a big HOSPITAL bill, by remaining clueless about your new tractor.

...and as others have said, if the tractor won't go into gear with the engine running, the clutch won't DISengage. :)

Nat,

I second what you say. I am new to the Farmall SC. I found out yesterday that the fan shaft runs in oil. The screw/gasket/plug was missing on mine, and the shaft has been running dry. Not a good thing. The owners manual told me what to do to keep it lubricated.

Lets get the wording stright first. Are you saying it goes in gear and will not move or are you saying it will not go in gear. If it will not go ing gear then the clutch is stuck, common problem woith tractors. What you need to do is block the pedel down a day or 2 then in the open start it in gear and go for a long drive with the pedel down.

Yes you are correct, I start it up in neutral and let it idle for 10 min to warm up and try to engage the clutch and it just grinds.

SO let me get this straight, I but a block on the clutch pedal a day or two before I start it, I start it up in gear, which IS hard to start to begin with, and drive around with the clutch pedal pused down?

Should I check any fluid levels? Thanks for the info. BEN

Yep thats about it. By the way your clutch doesn't disengage. If it was engaged you will be moveing your problem is the clutch will not disengege

Ben – As the others suggest rust has caused the clutch disk has to stick to the flywheel/pressure plate. Not uncommon for a tractor that’s been sitting for a while – especially where it’s humid.

However rather than trying to free it up by starting in gear this is safer and usually works for me: Use another tractor, P/U or whatever to pull the tractor alternately forward and backward with it in gear.

Put the tractor’s transmission in 3rd or 4th, block the clutch pedal all the way down or have an assistant hold it down. Then with the ignition OFF and the clutch pedal down, pull the tractor a few feet forward - so the engine rolls over a couple dozen revolutions or so. Then move your tow vehicle around to the other end and pull the tractor BACKWARD a few feet transmission still in 3 or 4 and clutch depressed).

Repeat these short forward and backward pulls as required. Unless the clutch is stuck really bad it’ll usually free up within 2 or 3 pulls. And once it’s unstuck it will work as if nothing had happened.

Incidentally there is no fluid level, etc associated with the clutch on a Super C – it’s 100% mechanical.

Yes, you have the right idea. What has happened is that the clutch disc has sort of rusted to the flywheel, most likely because of moisture in the air. It happens quite often to any vehicle with a clutch if allowed to sit and not be used for a period of time. Doing what OLD has mentioned will usually work, and most likely will work. Just be sure you have plenty of room when you start the engine because the tractor is going to move, and you will not be able to stop it until the clutch is no longer stuck. You might want to be ready to stop the engine, and you also might want to apply the brakes as you are moving. The idea is to try and make the clutch slip, once the clutch slips, the problem will be solved. I am guessing this will happen in less than 50 feet of travel.

50 feet is about the norm but I have seen them stick for up to a mile or more.

I have a 200, which is about the same thing. On mine, I could start it in neutral, but it would grind when I tried to shift. I tried all of the above stuff, then had it picked up. Turned out that one of the bolts inside the clutch had backed out a bit. After that was fixed, it would sometimes stick anyway. What I do now is to park it, chock all the wheels, lower the bush hog, and put a 2X4 between the clutch pedal and the footrest to keep the clutch plates from sticking during periods of non-use. That has helped a lot. You can also get it rolling down a hill, push in the clutch pedal, then stomp on the brake a few times to free it up. You need to plan ahead on that one :-) It can be a crazy ride. Good luck

Yes, when you push down on the pedal, the clutch is DISENGAGED, when you take your foot off the pedal, the clutch is then ENGAGED.
