I took another reading on the glow plugs according to ypur instructions. Here's the readings - #1 = 1.18v; #2 = 1.17v; #3 = 1.23v & #4 = 1.29v. How do these sound to you?

Hi TDK, #3 & #4 look balanced and #1 & #2 are balanced. You may want to check the connection on the copper wire between #3 & #2, make sure there is no oxidation, clean with emery cloth or sand paper.

Is this with indicator in circuit or a 6V lamp?

These are all new glow plug and are they all the same brand? Originals were 1.5V Champions.

Have to go out for a couple hours, check back later.

These readings are with the indicator installed. Glow plugs are new & same brand(C/IH), but if you remember in my previous post, I burned up a new indicator. Could I have done damage to plugs at that time also ?

Hi TDK, yes I remember you burned up a $40 indicator. After examinig your last voltage readings, there is nothing to indicate that the glow plugs are damaged.
We had a B414,434,384 from 1962 thru to 1994
and they are all the same BD154 engine. The only one we had glow plug problems with was the B414.
The first problem happened when the indicator had a cracked element, then another time I think it was #2 shorted out and then it burn out #3 and another time one went open and none of them worked.

Regarding your first new indicator going up in a flash in a couple of seconds, I would suspect a rubbed thru short on the black wire that connects the indicator to #4 GP or a faulty indicator element. One shorted GP would only cause it to heat in 3/4 of the normal time.

A faulty indicator element shouldn't happen in today's automated testing of electrical components but years ago it wasn't uncommon to replace a household light buld turn on the power switch and have a flash bulb.

Hope this helps

The glow plugs seem to be working fine. Indicator heats up in 2 - 3 seconds. The reason for frying the first indicator was incorrect wiring on G/P's. Full story - Glow plugs were not working when tractor was bought a couple months ago. Pulled instrument to find bad indicator and fried wiring. Rewired, replaced indicator & G/P's. I did not remove the plugs and wiring, so when I replaced them, I simply wired them wrong. Did not realize they were wired in a series. Everything is A-OK now thanks to you and others here on Y/T. Thanks again !!! P.S. - Is there any way to check the glow plugs without installing them ?

Hi TDK, yes I used to test the GPs by unconnecting the wire between #1 GP and the frame ground and then use another piece of wire to connect from test GP to nut of #1 GP. Now there will be 5 GPs in series so it will take longer for them to glow red hot but if there is no glow then it is open and none of them will work.
