Perhaps some of you knowledgeable and helpful guys will have an answer to this one. I have a 1963 Chev 35 one ton with 292 engine. It starts and idles fine but misses and f**ts horribly with any throttle opening at all. I have replaced condenser, coil, lead from coil to distributor, fuel filter with no effect. Cap, rotor and points and plugs look fine but plugs were sooty. Took the top off the carb and blew air through main jet - no difference.

These are a pretty simple and basic engine but I am stumped. Help!!

Those symptoms showed up for me one time and turned out to be the lead-in wire in the distributor (coil-to-points). The insulation had worn off and when the trottle was opened a little (or a lot), the advance mechanism moved things and rubbed the bare wire against a ground.

Karl, that has symptoms of timing problems, put a timing light on it before you start rebuilding the carb....Mike in Exeter Ontario

Karl, Sounds like you should look for a worn exhaust lobe , will idle great but doesn"t open the valve far enough at higher RPM . Not opening the valve enough keeps some exhaust gasses in the cyl, & when intake valve opens the remaining pressure goes back into the intake manifold causing engine to pop up thru carb .

Take the distributor apart and clean the vac. advance good, my 350 was doing the same thing and that was the problem

292 is a pretty good old engine and is almost bullet proof. I'd say you need a carb rebuild. Sounds like its running way to rich. I'm guessing the choke isn't stuck closed since you said you took the air cleaner off. Shoot I had a 250 which is almost the same engine and it still ran good with 300,000 on it.

You got lucky, try a new '77 Nova 250 that had leaky head gasket, valve cover gasket, squeaky water pump, bad choke thermostat, bad carburetor, broken coil cover (the factory put black electrical tape over it to cover the hole up),an oil pressure light that would come on when descending a hill, among other problems, and this car was traded with 31,000 miles on it.31,000 miles! It sat for 3 months before some sucker bought it.
(The car also had a broken leaf spring, rusted thru rear shocks, cloudy paint job, numerous exhaust systems, poor spacing of welds at the rear wheellip that lead to premature rust in the seam,a rear brake problem that would develop heavy brake dust that needed to be cleared monthly or the wheel would lock up when wet,a rear defroster that would continually blow fuses...etc).
The 70s was the worst for quality control, and no American car was immune.
Personally,I'm not a straight 6 fan but I think the Ford 300-6 was one of the best. The slant 6 wasnt bad,but way underpowered.

I've never had any problems with a good old chev stright 6. As a atter of fact I have 4 or 5 or them in my shop, some rebuildable and some not and one that was rebuilt a few years ago with less then 3000 miles on it. Only reason its not still in the truck it was in, is because the rear coil spring arms rusted out.

Theres one mixture adjustment screw on the front of the carb. Mine keeps vibrating rich. The spring gets weak. Let the engine warm up good. Take the screw out and put some non-hardening Permatex on the screw and reinstall. Start the engine and adjust that screw to max rpm and then go in 1/8 turn. Turn the engine off and let the Permatex dry. Should help.

Compression low, timing off, advance not working, burnt valve....any number of things. The soot could be related to weak spark or low compression,or the carb is flooding.

When were the plugs replaced? Sounds like the engine is running too rich. I would put in a set of new plugs. Hal
