Dead H-clutch/tranny?

Had the H hooked up grinding feed last week when all of a sudden it stopped dead. Thought I must have really shelled out the grinder this time. Spent 1/2 hour going over it, nothing wrong. Unhooked it from H, started up the tractor, let out the clutch and killed it instantly. Engine starts and runs fine but kills as soon as you let out the clutch, even in neutral. Any suggestions where to start looking?

You may have fried the pilot bearing.

If Your tractor has a belt pulley I'd pull the gearbox off and inspect the constant mesh gears at the very front of the transmission. Also may be something wrong inside the clutch housing but not enough info to tell.

It sounds like it died while grinding feed indicating something came on fast and takes a lot of power.

Does it have the belly pump in it? If so does the pump have fluid in it? Might want to check and see. The pump runs only when the clutch is out so this is a potential area to cause problems.

Well since you say you where using a grinder then I'd have to guess that some thing it the PTO area has locked up on you. Maybe a bearing or some other part of the PTO system. Can you shift to pto out of gear and or have you even tried to do so.

Most likely the tractor is still in gear. Pull the shift lever out and look down in that hole and see if the three shift rails are all lined up. Probably the shift lever is worn down on the bottom end, and you didn't get the transmission completely into neutral and it just sort of shook itself into gear. It is possible that something more serious happened, but let's not go there until you have checked out the easy fix.
