I aqcired an M today with a weird flat back PTO unit,has a weird manifold that is extra big on the exhaust part especially,and an extra thick top part where the pipe screws in.Serial #148390 X1.Why is the PTO so different?Thanks for any help

That serial number makes the tractor a 1947, the flatback PTO was used on much earlier tractors. The X1 after the serial number means the tractor was equipped at the factory to burn gasoline, but your description of the manifold makes it seem like a distillate fuel manifold. I think you own an M that was put together from several different tractors, either that or the torque tube, where the serial number is located, has been replaced with a unit from a newer tractor. What is the serial number on the engine?
