Mine was doing same thing after I put a new carb on it. What was happening is I had a very dirty gas tank that clogged my sediment bowl so I was draining the line, then it would quit. I"d stop, scratch my head and finally noticed my in-line fuel filter was refilling. after a whileI figured out why there was a standpipe in the sediment bowl assembly I replaced when I got the tractor.
Hopefully, it"s that simple.

See if the rotor turns when cranking, if it doesn't you probably have a stripped distributor
gear. If it does turn without jerking. Pull No1 sparkplug and hold your thumb over the hole while someone slowly cranks the engine until you feel compression, keep cranking slowing until your timing mark is aligned with the pointer. No1
piston should be at TDC and your rotor should be pointing at No1 plug wire. If it's off a lot I would repeat this procedure one more time to be certain. If it's off after this, you probably need to pull the distributor and check for a stripped gear or a sheared woodruff key. Hal

Does it sound normal when cranking (this is good if it does)

Does the dist. turn when cranking (important)

pull #1 plug (toward radiator)and put a chunk of 5/8 heater hose, with a taper ground on the end to seal it, in the hole. crank in spurts, or by rolling it in high gear(ign off)till air pressure comes out the hose. Look at the timing pointer and line up the notch, by continuing turning in that direction till it does.
Look at the rotor in the dist. If it points to #1 plug's terminal, it is close enough to run.

Doing a compression check will assist in finding out if there is major trouble (it should be 110-125 or more)
Let us know what happens.
