Was pushing dirt up hill to level and pushing in clutch & roll back down. It made a screeching sound like brake noise and killed motor when I let clutch out. I can shift all gears, when clutch is depressed, can roll tractor by hand both directions. took cover off of TA, can turn gears till I let out clutch. Low side of TA didn't work when I bought it. Any ideas????

Chris, Our 300 has done this numerous times. Your shifter rod has worn enough to allow the transmission to be in gear while you can still move the shifter around almost normally. Remove the three bolts that hold the shifter in place then remove the shifter. Use a large pry bar to allign the shifter slides you can see through the hole. You can start the tractor to test if it is in neutral prior to putting the shifter back in place. This recently happened to my son while coasting down the hill at the local grain elevator. His initial phone call made it sound like I should bring a bushel basket for the rear end parts but in 15 minutes we were ready to haul grain again.
Good Luck,
DeWayne

Got home from workand pulled out the shifter. All of the slides were lined up like they are supposed to be. Still think that if it was in 2 gears at one time, you wouldn't be able to roll it around with clutch pushed down. Guess I'll have to find a way to block up loader and take off so I can split it and see what's wrong. Thanks anyway, would have been great if that's what it was.Chris

I didn't even consider being in 2 gears, because you can rollit around with the clutch depressed. Thot that would lock up rear end. Have friday off, will try that and let you know what happens.Wondered if there could be something in the clutch that came apart thats doing it?I have taken the cover off of the top of ta, and canturn gears with a block holding clutch down, all gears look good, no teeth missing.
thanks for the info, Chris

1/ starter may be engaged and locked to flywheel ring gear.

2/ if your oil was low and the hill steep you may have exposed your pickup and spun a bearing.

take your starter off and check it out. while its off put in neutral and see if you can turn the engine over by hand.

Motor runs and starts OK, something from clutch on back is the problem. start it up and let out clutch and it kills engine. thanks,
chris

If the Low Side never worked then its probably been hard to get out of gear.If you pulled it out of one gear and into another it could be locked in two gears which would also kill the engine

that was my first thought, but the thing about that is if it was in two gears you wouldn't be able to roll it by hand.
