What have I done wromg that would make the resistor in the charging system of my Super A get red hot? I have a 4 position light switch.

Alan, that resistor, if wired to the correct place, being the gennys Field post on a 2 wire Cutout Relay system, shouldnt see but a few amps and NOT run red hot, so I wonder like the good gents below if shes wired correct????? ??.

If its somehow wired across battery voltage to ground it would get hot cuz its supposed to be in series with the gennys Field.

See if you have a 2 terminal (BAT and GEN) Cutout Relay instead of a 3 wire (BAT ARM FLD) Voltage Regulator????? If a 2 wire relay, the gennys Field post should wire up to that switch which provides a dead ground for high chage but a resistive ground via that resistor for low charge. But if you have a VR the gennys Field post DOES NOT wire to that switch but to the Field terminal on the VR. The Field current regulating type of combination light and charge switch wouldnt be used on a full fledged VR but if re configured one could still use the light switch portion

AS the gents mentioned if you had voltage or grounds etc converted you may need to regroup n wire her correct. Post back n let us know!!!

QUESTION FOR BOB N RUSTY????? ?

Is there an aditional light dimming ballast on those switches 4 position (L H B D) in addition to the field current ballast??? If so, I wonder if he has it wired incorrect????? ?? Its been a long time sice I worked on them Farmalls

Yeah John - there's two separate resistors on the Farmall LHDB switch.

The field resistor is made of of relatively light wire and is wound on a mica(?) preform with a terminal (for the generator F wire) at one end.

The headlight dimming resistor is a coil of about 8 turns of heavier wire and is fastened between two terminals directly on the switch. When originally supplied the dimmer coil was was covered with asbestos insulation. However the asbestos is usually long gone after 50+ years of life in a Farmall's electric box!

Thanks Bob, I knew you would know the answer, that sure makes sense as the field current resistor dont carry much curent or expend near as much energy as the light dimmer would. You guys are gonna make me a Farmall electrician versus them Deeres Ive mostly worked on for years lol.

Regards,

John T

That’s not good! Sounds like either the switch is wired up wrong or (long shot possibly) the 4 position switch has gone bad.

Has your tractor’s original wiring been modified? I.e. has the original cutout relay been replaced with a voltage regulator, or has a 12 volt conversion been done? If so there should be no wiring connected to the field resistor. Only with the original cutout setup is a connection made to the field resistor.

The 4 position switch is for use with the original cut-out relay type of generating system. If you have replaced the relay with a voltage regulator, or have gone to a 12 volt system, the wiring needs to be changed. Bob M. can better answer this question.
