I picked up a Farmall 400 in 1983 that had no hydraulics, just a straight drawbar. Used that to haul wagons of hay or sileage where there were no hills. It would walk beside a 656 pôwer wise. The previous owner put in FireCraters when it was overhauled in the late 60s, and I guess that it did not do much work since. If it had hydraulics I could have added a snowblower and rented it out for winter, but she was a bareback. Also had a whiteface 656 bareback that came from a jockey. The 656 was better on hills..... 15-2000 pounds makes a BIG difference going down!!! QR

Carl: Are you absolutely sure there are no hydraulics. I have some questions. Are there levers on side of hood, just to the right of the dash? These would be about 7" long with a round knob slightly smaller than a golf ball. There may be 1, 2 or 3 of those levers. Are there two steel tubes, one about3/4" the other about 1' running parallel to each other from under dash along the right side to a pump mounted between distributor and timing gear case? These would be visable just below hood to back of engine then they dip to level of frame rails along engine. If indeed you have those items you do have hydraulics. It's very rare to find a Farmall 400 with no hydraulics, not unheard of though.
