I have a couple original IH coils laying around here(ones with the seam around the middle). Is there a number on them or some way of telling if it`s a 6 or 12 volt ?

My Farmall 350 which is a factory 12 volt has the small coil with the rib. The mounting bracket has the little tab that the resistor is attached to.

If they are original IH coils, they are six volt. Only recently have original appearing 12 volt coils become available as an aftermarket item.

Rustyfarmall, If I understand what you`re saying then, they never made a 12 volt coil with that rib around it in the 50`s or early 60`s? Thanks,Mark

Mark the coils were on diesels,LP some 450-350 and others, and on tractors into sixtys were 12 volt.I have never found any I could tell apart by outside. Some of the bands on the 12 had a place to mount a resistor and some came with the resistor rivited to band.

Mark, if all else fails you could use an ohmmeter to measure their primary resistance as measured between their lil + and - terminals. If its in the 1.25 to 1.75 or so ohms range its my best guess it likely a 6 volt coil, but if over 2 to 3 and some over its my guess its a 12 volt coil. This is just a best guess as I have absolutely no specs or data on those coils, maybe Bob or Jim or Hal does and they can tell you the precise values??? They made some coils labeled "12 volts for use with an external ballast resistor" which are in reality more like 6 volt coils and some labeled "for 12 volt use only" what I would consider a true 12 volt rated coil.

Both coils and points are more "current" then voltage devices, its the current passing through or switched by them that sets up the induced voltages and energy transfer etc. If you use a 6 volt unballasted coil at 12 volts it could run hot plus the points wont last near as long due to the excess currents.

John, I suppose what I could do is take a reading off of one of my other tractors` coils and compare the readings with these coils. I`m hoping to find that they`re 6V.Thanks,Mark
