What is needed to convert a 6v generator to 12v? Is it expensive to have an electrical shop do this?

Is there a Delco 12v genny that can drop in place of the original on my 1942 M?

I am considering installing a 10SI, and want to explore the option of this to make it look 'original'.

John G, I have used 6 volt gennys to charge at 12 volts simply by replacing the Voltage Regulator with a 12 volt n they all worked fine, maybe not super high amp charge rates, but they worked. Im NOT saying thats the engineering or electrically correct way to do it, Im ONLY saying Ive done it n it worked. However, a good old fashioned genny shop can upgade your core to a 12 volt (new field coils and armatures as needed) no problem at all and of course, you will have to use a 12 volt Voltage Regulator.

An alternator provides more charging amps and even at lower RPM"s if you wanna go that route and originality isnt a concern, but that requires a swap to Negative ground and swapping coil and ammeter leads etc. If you convert from 6 to 12 volts on a coil ignition you also need to EITHER add an external voltage dropping (12 to 6) Ballast Resistor or use a full 12 volt rated coil plus change any lights to 12 volts ya know.
