Fun topic - the ideal shop

I've read a ton of posts about tractors, and certainly they are a great thing to talk about, but I have another topic that is almost as much fun to think about.

What do you want in your ideal shop?

I'm thinking about things that most people would see as "must haves" in their shop. Not looking for garagemahals that would require an unlimited budget. Rather, I am wondering about things that the every day tractor enthusiast would be looking for.

I'll take a stab at mine. Feel free comment, add, or remove items.

1. Good size. Enough to hold at least 4 tractors in different states of repair.

2. Heat (at least in Iowa; in Texas I might be asking for A/C)

3. Great lighting.

4. Tools, tools, tools.

5. Floor drains.

5. Wash bay?

6. Paint area.

7. Ample electric and air connections.

8. Phone. For pizza delivery of course.

9. You fill in the blanks. I'm looking for things you think you could not do without.

Joe

I'm working right now on a small 25x36 steel building on a place we bought, turning it into a "one-project-at-a-time" shop to hold me over until I can build a bigger one on the place. That way my projects won't be in the way of repairing ranch equipment here at our home shop.

I've already got the floor epoxied grey, insulation and tin on the walls, and working on the ceiling now. Have 4 large metal-halide lowbay lights I picked up on ebay, plus it'll have flourescents around the walls for task lighting. Have an overhead radiant tube heater I picked up used for cheap, and it'll also have AC. Gonna build a small lean-to just outside the walk-in door for an office and a place for the air compressor. Have an old working Pepsi machine for "refreshments" and also eventually it'll have a TV in there too and maybe even a computer. The idea being that by having the shop have all the "comforts of home", there won't be any reason to be in the house!

Cowman's idea down below about having the shop connected to the house is great, but here's one better- saw a few years ago an article about some rodeo family who built a huge steel building for their indoor roping arena, and in one end of it, up off the ground above the chute area, they built a complete "apartment" with several bedrooms, a balcony to sit out on overlooking the arena, and they lived in it. Now picture that building with a cement floor, hoists, tools, etc. filled with tractors and other projects!

Lastly, a for a neat website forum entirely devoted to "the ideal shop", do a yahoo or google search for "garage junkies"...lots of good stuff there!

I would like a nice big shop not sure what size, but it would have to hold The 7 tractors we have now, with lots of room for other additions to the family, my combine, threshing machine. A lean to for plows, A cement floor, heat. A loft for parts, Lots of tools, man i can keep going, for ever, a coffee pot, one of them fridges, with a handle on the front that when you pull it beer comes out(MGD, Coors)Just somewhere to get away from My younger sisters when they are fighting over petty stuff. It's kind of hard now, with a old shed, inbeetween 80 &100 years old, still standing, just enough room for the 7 tractors. Kind of cold in the winter.

Overhead hoist
Hot water heater (on demand or tank)
Lean to off each side for outside storage
Plug up the floor drain
Some type of fan to move the air in the summer
Paint booth
More tools
Pad eyes for straightening parts
All else is ok for my needs.

Joe, I bet I went to school with some of your relatives from New Albin. Anyway, I have worked on the IH letter series tractors for about 25 years now and you have mentioned almost everything I would have in my ideal shop. The only thing I would recommend is make sure you have at least a 10 foot ceiling and a steel pole or beam in the rafters so you can hook a chain hoist to it for pulling transmission covers and splitting tractors. I always power washed my tractors outside. As you know, that won't work during our winters though.

The ideal shop would be attached to the house so I don't have to get dressed to go out and find something at 5 AM
The floor would be coated with epoxy and always clean.
Of course, good lighting, heat & air are a given.

Joe: A fridge is a must, you've got to think of your guests. Keep the seating simple, you don't want it too comfortable. I like 20L or 5 gal pails, they don't take up lot of space, serve the purpose, yet none of your guests will get the idea this is an afternoon drinking establishment.

Hugh,

It would be good to have a couple of kegs of beer on hand also. Maybe one of amber light and one of creamy dark ale so guests would have a choice.
Also, a nice stereo system with speakers located strategically throughout the shop.

I have just the opposite problem, I dream about getting some of the crap out of my shop. We are building a home so right now I have couchs and chairs, tables , bikes, and all of our other junk. I look forward to the day it is a shop.

I did something like this in an ag class I had. One thing I think would be great is a winch on the wall opposite the door so I can winch in a non-running tractor. Pretty good idea, I think.

That is a great suggestion, the winch to pull the non-working tractor into the shop. I don"t understand though, how are you going to get the tractor back out of the shop? You can"t push the tractor with the winch;)

Fire extinguishers -cause things don't always go right.

Intercom - hate to miss a meal! or messages like "When you come back don't forget to bring the_____"

TV (or radio) so at least you can hear your favorite team get beat while you're getting greasy.

More Storage!

A couple things I wish I'd done differently on mine, went taller on the ceilings so I could put in one of the I-beam and trolley systems for an overhead winch...

A/C would be nice from early march to late november 8^)

Epoxied floor before I moved in,too much work to do it now..

GO BIGGER.. I built a 30x50,thought I'd never use all that space,wrong 60x100 might be about right..haha

All this, or at least the stuff I don't have, which isn't much, but Paris Hilton would be nice to bring me my Diet Coke so I didn't have to go to the fridge myself and get it. Just for the sake of the children of course. Harley
