Mitch: Just came in from getting the Farmall 130 ready for another week of plowing snow. Checked the oil, added a litre, checked the gas, took a full tank and it was full last Sat. Greased the little tractor just because of it's good behaviour.

My drivway is just about 500' from my shop door out back, to the highway. I now have a trail, 20' wide to the highway, with snow piled height of tractor down one side. It took a full tank of gas to keep it that way all week. Sure glad we didn't get hammered like Montreal and Eastern Ontario. I heard one report they got 17" of the white stuff in a one hour period, during that last snow fall.

You mentioned Mike Soldan the other night, and I suggested maybe they might have gotten off lightly as the storm seemed to track south. Well, just look down the YT pages, no Mike Soldan in the past 24. Do you supposed he is burried in a snowbank somewhere up in Exeter. You know traditionally they get it worse than than we do. I went up the next line north from me today, there is definately more snow. That is still 30 miles south of Exeter.

MIKE ARE YOU OUT THERE IN A HURON COUNTY SNOWBANK?

Here I am, I bin busy, either plowin snow or going to relitives, or church youth activities. Now that you mention it, i should check the oil again, and gaser up. Also bin fixen are mail box, plowman knocked it off with the wing, so at lunch we shove the box in the snow back, and when the mail comes we take the box up with us! Man is it cold out tonight, think i'll head up to timmy's for a large Double Double, Anybody else want one?LOL

Mike and Hugh: I live between Goderich and Kincardine and we also got this snowstorm. however the farther north you went from Exeter the better it seems as we got less snow. i came back from Hamilton on Friday and boy did they get a lot of snow for that area. More than we got. It was sure snowing in Hamilton on Thursday. Where I have been working is a stones throw from the old IH plant and it is on Westinghouse Street. I am planning to go and have a look this week and see if there is anything left of Hamilton works. I also note the map says there is a Case Street in that vicinity. Is this significant? I don't know

George: I been trying to figure for sometime, what part of Ontario you call home. Might have known with a handle like George, got to be from the land of the Scotsmen. That has got to be a rough spot in the middle of a winter storm with a west wind. I've been to Godrich quite a few times but only once did I go beyond there to Kincardine. I've been all the way to Owen Sound on number 6. Got to explore that country a bit more sometime. One thing that stands out in my mind on that drive up 21, near Amberly there is someone with a line up of old iron, lot of different makes, must be close to 35 tractors.

I was in Toronto late Fri. at Listers down on Brown's Line, thought about coming home via QEW and 403, had heard a few rumblings about that Hamilton snow. I got caught once last winter were the empty tractor trailer had trouble getting traction on the mountain. Since I was leaving just about dusk, I decided 401 would be best trip home. With snow piled up on shoulders, and there was melt Fri. afternoon, about 6pm would have been a great time for black ice.

Had to go to a farm north of Embro on the way home, took a gravel side road for ease of turning in to the farm. I could see the gravel road had been plowed in past couple of hours. About 1/2 way through there you would never know it. The wind and drifting snow, I'd never have wanted to stop, it was hitting the bumper of the Mack quite steady. Came back out of there on black top, and loose snow was bad on that route. Rather than going short cut north of London, I hi tailed it back to the 401.

Yo Hugh!...yep I'm here , been busy, the other day you mentioned "Mike must be sunning himself"..welp, I had the GMC stuck halfway tween the house and barn, had to get the blower out and do the lane and yard, we didn't get the storm they forcast but we got a lot of drifting snow, definitely worse east and south. I didn't clean up real good figuring we would get more snow , but today all is quiet so in the morning I'll clean the yard up real good, let the cattle have a run in the snow and get the chores done. It sounds like a bit of time you spent cleaning up your lane. Farmallkid's rig must be similair to yours...be good for now...Mike in Exeter Ontario

Mike: Sorry about that, I had scanned the YT pages quickly, missed that responce to Patrick. I was on here early this am didn't notice your name on threads.

Good to know you are hale and hearty. There is a noticable difference in snow where highway 81 crosses from Petty St, to Townsend Line from what there is here and that is only a mile north of me.

I did work the little tractor quite vicious on a couple different days this week. Yesterday morning it was 2.5 hours of solid plowing. I had to push it all about 45 degrees to drivway. I piled most of it to the east, thinking most of our storms come in from west, with west winds. I'm hoping that windrow of snow will create an updraft and the snow will lodge in corn stalks to the east. I would liked to have pushed it back about 30' from drivway to the west, but there is winter wheat planted there this winter. Didn't want to make ruts in that. Anyhow if another storm comes with an east wind, I'm in trouble. Might have to call the guy with the big snowblower.

Hugh, if I were closer, I would bring the H and loader and take my turn at it. I've only had to move snow once so far this winter, (not saying it too loud though). I don't envy you guys one bit.

Rustyfarmall, I remember one winter that I used more fuel in the tractor and walk behind than I did in my truck, seems I blew snow every day and filled the tank on the tractor once a week, I don't mind blowing snow but if I don't have to do it, it suits me fine..It takes a good hour to clear out my yard and lane at the farm, a few minutes to let the tractor warm up and you are usually snow covered and wet when you are done...a price to pay for Canadian winters...Mike in Exeter Ontario

Rusty: You best knock on wood. I thought last winter was bad enough, something like 38 times to Feb. 1st. Here it is the 17th Dec., and I'm at 4 times. Kind of taxing the little horse heavy.

Peabody: Got to give that one serious consideration. A great many Canadians already do this part time. They actually migrate, once you become a retired old fart, it works quite well. There is one little snag for old Canadians, we can't stand your heat plus humidity in summer. The heat alone we can tolerate, thus the reason for migration.

Then there is an additional problem for old iron nuts. You either have to maintain two fleets of old tractors, or haul them south in fall and north in spring. I know a couple of guys that have two fleets of tractors, they tell me the cost of security while you are away 5 to 6 months, is starting to hurt. The problem is just as great both in south and north. A certain element of society just can not resist breaking into a shed full of old tractors. These midnight salvage yards do quite well. Just another problem of the old tractor being worth more for parts than as a whole tractor.
