Hi,

I wasout plowing snow with a 1946 BN. It was running fine. I stopped, put it in neutral and hopped off. The engine suddenly sputtered, backfired, then stopped running. (it reminded me of hopping off of my lawn tractor when the kill swwitch engages and stops the engine; it happened that fast)

I tried to restart but all I get is a loud backfire my son described it as sounding like a shotgun going off.

The engine was switched to a 12 volt system years ago.b I just need some help on where to statrt troubleshooting to fix the problem

Thanks
Kim

Plowing snow is hard work so you may have stressed the engine more than you ever have. Sounds like a stuck valve but it should start and run with only one bad valve, so I too would look at the ignition. To see the timing mark mentioned below you need to take the cover off of the flywheel housing. Thats the half moon shaped part at the bottom of the torque tube. Maybe the ignition parts got wet from snow. If you can get it inside and let it dry off it might start and run OK. I live in W MI also(Ravenna) and we got a lot of snow lately. Let us know. Dave.

My thoght had to do with igntio nand timing. I'll check those out. I'll give you a decriptipn of the mount later. I need to look at it agin to make an accurate description ( I'm not exactly sure on the mounting bolts bavck by the rear wheel. The plow is in front)

For starters I would check the distributor cap for any cracks. Inspect the rotor too. If these appear ok you should pull No1 plug near the radiator and bring No1 piston up on the compression stroke to TDC. Someone should handcrank the engine until you feel compression
against your thumb, then look the timing mark on the flywheel. Keep cranking once you see the mark until it's aligned with the indicator. Then see where your rotor is pointing, it should be at No1 position in your distributor. Hal

Sounds to me like something broke in the timing area like distributor shaft, timing gear, or something. Or a wire broke that feeds the coil or distributor? That's where I'd start looking anyway.

There is a couple of us on here that would like to see how you are set up for plowing snow. If it is mid or front mount I would be interested in pics if you have the ability. I'll leave it to the mechanically inclined to help you with the purpose of your post.

I found the problem. The distributor gear teeth wwerre worn down and it made the rotor. Now to find the gear. I was hoping to find the gear and not have to buy a new distributor.
I checked Stamm's in Wayland but they only had used distributor for 125.

Dave, I don't have a great way to show it. I'm in MI also on the West side of state.

Is it front or mid mount? Any chance for you describing the assembly and how you lift it?
I have a great running B and would like to use it in the winter to keep the drive clear.

I put a 7ft rear blade on the back of my B and I use a Char-lyn pump for the Hyd. and it works pretty good! Gets funny looks from the neighbors but the like it when I do the drives for them.
