im in the process of taking apart my super m.and im stuck on the big nut at the steering post that connects to the steering rod that goes through the radiator.we heated it with little propane tanks but they wont get it hot enough and to bolt is halfway rounded off so we have to use a pipe wrench. would it hurt any of the gears in the post if we heated the nut with a cutting torche and got it glowing?

If you are talking about the cast nut or cap that is in front I've found that a six sided socket from my three quarter socket set works best to loosen that. I don't know the size I use but I had to tap it on with a hammer.. I think you can heat it some too but the greese or gear lube in the gear box will smoke some.

in the middle of the big nut it looks like there is a little screw, does it have to come out before the nut can?

If you are talking about the nut ahead of the worm gear behind the cap plug, it may have a cotter pin through it. It should be a castellated nut. Once you loosen up the front shaft back at the universal just unscrew the whole front shaft, worm gear and nut out of the housing and take it into the shop where it can be cleaned up and look for that cotter pin or what is left of it.

I haven't worked on a M before, but I think the steering is about the same as a H. If you unhook the steering shaft from the u-joint in the middle, the shaft & worm gear will un-screw togather through the front of the steering gear box. Loosen the rear shaft at the steering wheel
(two collers with set screws) and slide the rear shaft & u-joint to the rear. Then turn the front shaft clockwise and the shaft should screw out the front of the gearbox. Be careful of the shaft seal in the back of the steering gear, if it's still a good one. ken
