I hooked up the wire to the distributor and to the generator and then hooked up the battery. The magneto started cooking and leaking oil out the bottom and the generator got very hot. The tractor is positive ground. The manuals that I have do not show exactly how to rewire the tractor. The two wires to the generator could be switched?!? Any help??? Thank you

Before you do anything else with it, check the link below to Bob Melville's wiring diagrams for old Farmalls. One them will be the correct wiring diagram for your tractor.

Bob's stuff has bailed me and a lot of other people out of wiring jams numerous times. Just yesterday I printed the diagram of the inside of the ammeter/switch box and took it to the barn with me so I could make sure what I was doing!

To get through the distributor versus magneto problem, lets get back to the basics. Is there an EXTERNAL coil mounted along side your ignition distribution source? It will be a cylinder about four inches long and a couple of inches inches wide with two lighter gauge wire connections with one "plug" type wire coming out the top. If you have this particular piece, it is a distributor type ignition, if you don't...it's a magneto.

If we can establish this, we will have the basis to begin to help you out. The boys on here are pretty knowledgable and always willing to help. Good luck!

I think one of the work arounds for a bad coil in a mag was to mount a coil externally.

Um, you all know how reluctant I am to say that someone maybe aughta look in the Operator's Manual, but on page 39-42 it shows a distributor (battery/ coil ignition) and on pages 43-44, it shows a magneto.

Starting with a manual and Bob M's wiring diagrams would be a good thing.

Question, do you have a distibutor or a mag?? You said both and you can't have both. If you have a mag and you hooked a hot wire from the battery to it in any way you have destoryed it.

It has a magneto. In the wiring harness there was a wire from the ammeter that went out to the distibutor which is located below the magneto. Maybe I"m using the wrong terminology. Also can the wires from the amp bow to the generator be attached backwards? Which terminal is positive and which is negative?

Like OLD said, either you have a magneto, OR you have a battery ignition distributor. You cannot have both.

I think what he is referring to is the coil area of the mag (as the mag) and the distribution area (where the spark plug wires go) of the mag as the distributor.

Could be wrong though...

Capt is right. It has a distibutor cap and a magneto. Is there a wire that goes from the magneto to the generator?

Nope not wires ever go to a mag other then for a kill switch which isn't in any way hooked to the battery wireing in any way shape or form. If you hooked it up to the battery in any way you have probably burned out the mag coil, condenser and points, if not worse and if so then you will/may need to replace the mag.

It has a magneto, period. The distributor cap is part of the magneto.

A magneto creates its own spark, so it does not need a connection to the generator. It's called a magneto because it has a magnet in it that spins past the coil, and generates the spark.
