Someone is listing on ebay a gear reduction starter that is supposed to fit Farmall M, Super M, H and Super H. I"ve never heard of a gear reduced starter for these but I"m not an expert by any means. So I figured I would ask you folks. I have a Super H that I"ve had problems getting to start because it turns over so slow. I"ve got good clean connections and oversized cables, but I still struggle with it. Number 1, would it fit, and number 2, will it help?

Thanks in advance.

Ron

I have an M&W starter reduction on my M, and it works great. Dad put it on back about 1953. The idea is to reduce the torque the starter must generate to turn the engine over, which will reduce cranking speed. Cranking speed doesn't matter - if it fires it will go. Reduced required torque means less current draw which increases the voltage available to the coil. If you have a magneto, that doesn't matter - the impulse will take care of things.

2farmron Just so that you are not disapointed I have put 12v on some SM 400 450 with any help. As one of the guys said you need everything 100% or they will start hard.

A gear reduction starter will not increase cranking speed. It will in fact reduce the speed but increase the torque of your starter. If you don't want to convert to 12 volt try an 8 volt battery. Had the M&W version on a couple tractors many years ago.

You've got to have a good battery, switch and starter too. Just having heavy cables and good connections isn't always the cure.

We had one on our 47 M that I think was made by M&W. It wasn't that great. For some reason, my late Father took it off - I have the M now and it is not on it. I believe you can improve the speed of your starter much more by switching to 12 volt.
