The Farmall B I was struggling to keep running now won't crank at all. After reworking the carb. I tried to start it and it briefly whined one time and now it is dead completely. I double checked the battery with another battery boost. It's been cranked on about 15-20 times in the last 24 hours and has started every time. Do the starters quit that suddenly? Question 2? What year model is this Farmall B? It has 86 38 D stamped on the main frame. Thanks for all of the help.

Did you find the trouble with the carb, or did the starter/battery go out before you had a chance to test it? The float level was off on my SA enough to cause flooding. I let it run long enough to get it warmed up; sure did sound good to hear it run! I'm not familar with B models, but the serial number for the Super As' are located on the left side seat support. I hope your starter didn't go out.

Mark,
I am afraid that it did go out. I bought a new battery and I still get the same results. I think my carb. problem was a result of me not filing down the top and bottom of the carb. I took it off and cleaned it up really nice since it was beveled and it was sucking in a lot of air. I haven't gotten to test it yet. After the starter is rebuilt I'll be able to find out. It's my understanding that our tractors (A and B) are about the same engines with a little different wheel configuration. Mine looks like a tricycle.

It sounds like your well on the way to having that B running again ;-) I can't imagine why the carb would be beveled, but yeah, that would certainly cause starting problems if the mating surfaces are not flat. I have a book by Guy Fay titled Farmall Letter Series Tractors. It shows several pictures of the B and the wide right axle. There's one section that points out that the Farmall B was intended for farmers who needed a small tractor but also needed to cultivate two rows at a time. I hope the next time I see your post on YT you have'er running! Mark

If your battery is real low/bad a boost sometimes will not help. I'd start with a differant battery. Then if still no good check all battery cable connections. Then look at the starter. If you find you need a starter I have a good rebuilt one in my shop.

Hey thanks for the advice. How much would the starter cost me from you?

If the starter is stuck (fairly common) do this.
With ign. off put tractor in high gear, and rock the tractor violently back and forth with the top of the back tire. If the fan moves (any) the starter is not stuck. If it clicks loudly then moves, you temporarily fixed it. It probably needs a new pinion (clutch type from IH) and new bushings/brushes while it is apart.
If it was not stuck, and the cables etc. are good, a rebuild may be needed.
