In order for the thermosyphoning to occur in a Super A (without water pump)how much fluid must be in the radiator? Is there any place to feel the temperature to know if it is working?

alann: All Super A between serial number 336711 and 356001 have a presurized thermosyphon system. If they are working well it is quite easy to see. After tractor is warmed up remove the cap and you can readily see the rapid flow of coolant coming from engine into the top of the radiator.

Thanks, Hugh. Does the pressurized system use the same type of cap? Where does the pressure come from?

alann: The caps are different. When I got my Super A it had a non presurized cap, and was always belching out coolant even if coolant was down to 3" below cap. I asked why at IH dealer. He suggested I may have wrong cap. We checked the serial numbers and sure enough, after serial 336711 all were presurized. My tractor being 336977 was one of the early presurized thermosyphon systems. Whether the mistake was made at the factory or the first owner changed it, I have no way of knowing.

I bought a new cap for the presurized system and my cooling system worked much better. This leads me to believe the radiator must also be different. I have never checked that out though.

Thank you. The cap is loose fitting. I would just like to be sure the system is operating.

The level should be above the top of the top hose inlet port in the radiator. This allows the thermo effect to operate. It should be about an inch down when the radiator is warmed up. The Thermosiphon system does not have a pressure cap, so there should be no pressure in it (unless someone replaced the radiator with a pressureized version).

Jim: I agree most were not presurized, however all Super A between serial number 336711 and serial number 356001 all had presurized thermosyphon. I have one and it still works very well. I have to keep my coolant about 1-1/2" from cap. Above that it will put it out the overflow.

I might add that after my tractor is warmed up, I can remove the cap and see quite a rapid flow of coolant coming from the engine into the radiator. Actually a more rapid flow than I've seen from many engines equiped with a water pump.

You are very correct Hugh, my 1" level was warmed up pretty well. that allows for the expansion.
