My IH 424 gas would not start this a.m. It would just "click" when the starter button was pushed. It was about 5 deg above this morning. If messing with it, I held the starter button down and the battery terminals would heat up...Bad connection? After trying and trying resulted in the starter doing nothing, not even a click. I went and bought a new solenoid, cable for the neg terminal, and two terminals. Still nothing. I pulled started the tractor with no probem. Is the starter bad, maybe the starter drive? Please Help!

Maybe this is just too basic, but did you check to see if the battery is at full charge? With the low temp perhaps the voltage has lowered to 9 or 10 volts. Tallperson

How clean/ good is the connection where the ground cable attaches to the frame? If all connections at battery ,ground ,& starter are not in good shape, they need to be addressed before any other system diagnosis is started.

My 454 did the same thing. I found it was water in the starter.

That may make sense. The frozen water "froze" the starter. What I don"t get is the now it does nothing. Not even the click of the solenoid. I replaced that and still nothing... Is there a way to bypass the starter push button? Maybe jumper cables on the solenoid itself?

Thanks in advance

what I do as mine has this problem every time the temp is around freezing is to jump it from my truck direct to the starter. turn the key to the run position and then using a screw driver jump the S terminal on the starter to the main power cable on the starter. now doing this I dont hold it on but hit and then pull away to jog the starter untill it starts to turn. some times it takes around 20 hits.

You can bypass your starter button by shorting
across small S terminal on your solenoid to the other small terminal that feeds voltage to your ignition switch with a screwdriver. Make sure the tractor is out out of gear. Hal

I actually tried that and still nothing. I think I need to eliminate it cable from the battery to the starter by attachin one line of a jumper cable.?? If the same results, I guess the starter is bad?? :(

Diagnosis is the major element in the process.
1} When "nothing" happens is there lots of current flowing? (use a starter current meter ~12-18$ at the auto/tool store, pushes against the battery cable and reads in hundreds of amps.) If the current there is in the several hundreds 400-600, there is a direct short to ground, either in the starter, or the heavy wiring to the starter.
Have starter checked.
2} If no serious current, then the starter may be open (no conductivity inside, ergo bad brushes or similar open circuit). Or the solenoid is open (bad) To check this (again if no serious current) check to see if full voltage is on the starter side of the solenoid when the key is turned to start (momentarily)
3} Also if no serious current the start terminal (small with S usually) fron the ignition switch may be tested for voltage withe the key to start (momentarily). If none then the circuit to the key from the starter (usually a smaller #10 wire leading from the battery side of the solenoid to the dash area) through the amp gauge, if it has one, to the key and back to starter may be open.
Good luck, JimN
