Another Farmall B question - seals

Hi guys, another question. The engine overhaul is complete on our Farmall B. I talked to the mechanic yesterday and he said it was finished. Found a broken ring on one of the pistons. When dad took it in, he specified that he wanted the two leaky seals replaced in the rear axle. (Under the center of the tractor, under PTO). The mechanic said he didn't fix them, because he thought he'd have up to 500-600 $'s in labor to replace them. I'm about at the end of my budget on the mechanical portion of this tractor. Can anyone tell me what's involved in replacing these and how much the seals cost, how much labor etc? Are these common to leak? I want to pick up the tractor and move onto the paint and tires soon, but want the mechanicals done first. Thoughts?

I replaced the seal on the left side(the easy side). the cost of the seal is negligable, the labor getting to it is the real cost. First support the tractor in the center. Remove the drawbar and front drawbar support. I removed tire, axle housing and final drive all in one piece. This will slide away from the tractor and leaves the brake band on the tractor. you can see the seal from there. there is a small hole to allow oil to drain back into the rear end, make sure it's open before you put it back together. I'll tell you the wheel and axle housing assembly is fairly heavy but mostly awkward. its top heavy and wants to spin upside down. its best to have plenty of help, especially when your going back together. care must be taken not to tear up that new seal when reinserting splined axle through it. it sounds like your mechanic knows what he's getting into. I haven't got around to changing the one on the seat side. even more work. good luck. I really enjoy my B.
