While I"m home sick today, I started thinking about old tractors. I started thinking about what my mom has told me about my grandpa"s farm. He had a dairy farm in NE Iowa, between Plainfield and Nashua. If I remember right, he farmed around 360 acres, which is alot of land back in the 50s with just a Farmall Super M w/ TA and a Farmall B, and maybe a Farmall H. After he retired, he gave the Super M to my aunt, who sold it many years ago, The B was given to my other aunt, who when she got a divorce a few years back, made sure my cousin got it, not her ex. The B has been sitting in the same shed for at least 15 years. I started thinking how nice it would be to buy it from my cousin and restore it, in honor of my grandpa.

The B hasn"t ran for many years. If my memory serves me right, everything is still there, tires were holding air, the metal was all rusted, but straight, no holes, dents, etc. How much might this tractor be worth, what would be a fair price to start at? My cousin and his brother tend to break things. Fortunetly, they aren"t into tractors, so the B has been spared, for now....

How many of you have a Farmall B, and what do you use it for? If I can get this tractor, I will use it for raking hay, maybe get a cultivator for it. How much does the B weigh? How about fuel usage? Any more thoughts/ opinions would be helpful.

I learned to rake hay with the b and ih 16 rake back in 6th grade. After a couple weeks I was spinning left turns with the left tractor wheel back under the rake frame. probably the best pair i've ever used. If I can save the money I'd like to try buying back the 966 my grandpa bought new with a plow and disk back in the day.

I was raised west of Cedar Falls, IA. My dad sold his '50 H in 1980 at his farm sale when he retired. I found it in 2003. I had it restored by a guy near Parkersburg. I now have it in Wisconsin I have so many bucks in it I won't even talk about it....but it's like new now and I drive it in parades and take it for rides down the roads in evenings or weekends. Nothing gives me more satisfaction, I get goosebumps just starting it up.

Get a hold of that B! Fix it up nice. Pamper it, put it in parades. I'll buy it from you in a moment if you tire of it.

PS My tractor made the front cover of Red Power magazine May/June, 2005. A real thrill.

A moderate price would be $500. That gives him a little cash and gives you a good start.

$1,000 would be high in my mind, but if that's what it takes to get it, and you can afford it, so what?

Unfortunately you sometimes come across a relative who will try to profit from your sentimentality. I only have my grandpa's M because an uncle insisted on having a sale at grandpa's death. The uncle who still lived at home could only afford his dad's pickup and the M. He then sold it to me 25 years later just before his death. The uncle who insisted on the sale didn't need the money but liked to make other people squirm. He wasn't in the family, just married to my aunt.

I use mine for raking hay, odd light work around the yard, I run an 8 inch by 56 foot auger with it, and there are belly mowers that can be put on it. Mine has the over-bore pistons in it.

As far as fuel, I think it’s a real miser. It will move 10,000 bushels of corn with the auger on less than a tank (10 gallons) of gas. You can rake hay all day with mine on less than a tank. My uncle used to pull a 10 foot drill or a 12 foot windrower all day on less than a tank full.

I think it runs on very little fuel…

BTW, mine is a 1940 that my dad bought new. I won’t part with it until I’m departed…

Since it is a family heirloom and you are the only one that's willing to fix it up they should GIVE it to you! It's not worth much anyway unless the tires are still good, which is doubtful. Stuck engines can smetimes be a real drag.

We have an A that we rake hay with, It is just about the handiest thing for small work that I have. I can't say exactly how much fuel it uses but it will rake along time on a tank full. The B is basically a narrow front end wider rear wheel version of the A. I've seen the price on Ebay range from a couple hundred to over 2000 depending on shape and what's missing. I also have an H that my great grandpa bought new in 1940 that I probable have 5000 or more in but to me it is almost priceless.
