I bought that turboed 826 I was looking at. It is a 70 model, so it doesn't have a coolant filter. I asked the parts dep. at the dealership if you could get a kit to add one (they actually had one, but for a 414/436/466 series engine, the box is dated 8/30/1979!!)So $201 later I came home with the parts. My question is this, has anyone done this before? I know where the filter housing mounts and where the lines go into the block at. I think the local Hdy. place will bend me up some correct steel lines. Any thoughts are appriciated!! Thanks Erik

Thanks for all the info! $201 was a bit much, but I need some of the parts included in the kit for my 1466 that I am restoring. Have no fear, nothing will go to waste. Bermuda Ken, Thanks for the heads up, Ill talk to a different dealer and gets some copies of the 786 setup. Thanks again!! Erik in WI

Re: Water Filter on an 826.........more info!!! in reply to Erik in WI, 01-23-2006 17:05:14
If your "dealer" sold you a coolant filter kit the 300-400 series IH engines, they gave you the WRONG PARTS!!!!

IH made a kit to fit the 360-414-436-466 engines. The D-358 in your 826 does not have a "kit" made for it.

You need to get the individual parts instead. They are listed in the 786 parts catalog along with a good diagram showing the routing of the piping and valves.

If you copy the 786 diagram your cost will be much less than the "kit" they sold to you.... (the kit you will end up using only half of the parts from..... )

complete with brackets, and tubing for 45 dollars. Just needed to buy a new filter.

Yes, you should definetly have a water filter on it, but $201? You got screwed. Your dealer should have had a filter base for the water filter and two fittings w/shut-off valves to screw into the base and attach 5/8" heater hose for less than $50. Did this to our 826 a couple years ago, was taking the cab off, so I just ran the heater hoses to the filter base. Made a bracket to bolt the water filter base to, and bolted the other end of the bracket to the top of the add-on M&W oil filter base that is on most of those turbo'ed 826's.

I put a bunch of those kits on the 300 and 400 series motors as well as the 310 and 358 and the 4 cylinder German diesels. Any parts that the kit did not have (or suit me!!) were made locally. Make sure you flush first, and use distilled water (and a good antifreeze if needed) and a water pump lube. Change as recommended, not before. QR

Thanks for the info QR! Do you know off hand what the lenghts of the steel lines have to be, the ones in the kit are to short and the dealer is unable to get the lines anymore, they just tell you to make them out of copper!?!?(I don't think so) thanks Erik

Nope!!! If I could install, it can't be that hard. Pretty self evident.
