1950 Farmall Super A with remote hyd, wheel wts., split rockshaft, A-144 cultivators, A-189 1 btm 2 way plow, 10A disk, A-178 planter & A -61-A fert att., A-23 mower, Woods 6 foot under belly mower, 2 sliding drawbars, buckets of tools and seed plates, original toolkit and hardware.

Tractor completly restored. Everything stripped to bare steel and cast, new epoxy primer and MTK paint. New gaskets everywhere (except rear engine main), Rebuilt touch control, re-cored radiator, blueprinted oil pump, re-worked govoner housing, re-bushed rt. brake, all new fluids, all guards there, decals, new rubber, new rear rims, deluxe seat, total cost, $3,205.00. What do you think? Good deal?

What a GREAT little machine and attachments for my acre and a half garden and 16 acre farm. Might just sell the Fords and Deere's off.

Can someone tell me where I send the bill for the $5,000.00 of labor?

I had a blast restoring this thing. I am amazed at how these old units are built to last. I wonder how todays tractors will fare after 56 years.

Thanks for everyones help on this forum! I'll post some pics later next week.

Thanks Again,

scott#2

I always write a check to myself out of my own account for the labor. Makes me feel better.

Scott: When can we expect some photos? These are great little tractors. Now you see why I say there will be an operating Super A on earth after man is gone. I've been playing with these little offsets for 47 years now. I've had 3 SuperA, 2 - 130 and a 140, currently still have one of each.

I farmed with big tractors, all the way to 1066, at one time I had 9 tractors around large and small. When it came time for retirment, it was the little offsets that stayed around.

I will give a little advice, you need another offset. You will find installing and removing the mower every time you want to do gardening will become a bit of a pain. Getting the drive belt running true is the big hassel. In my opinion you've done it right. Just keep the Deere and trade the Ford for another Super A. I suppose you could get a kit and match the mower up to the Ford. If the Ford is an 8N it has one little advantage over ther Super A for mowing. It is nicer around trees and low hanging limbs, quite a difference in height. Ford probably has a bit more wallop on the pto.

Good luck and enjoy your tractor. By the way that 6 foot mower will do 12 acres per day.

Thanks Guys,

Im just pickled tink with this little thing. Ill get some pics up next week or so, after I get the time to mount the tires and put them on the rear. Still trying to catch up on business and should have my life back next week.

So far Im up to 5 machines 2 Super A's The other one runs good but needs some attention in the oil pressure department. A Ford 3930, loader, bush hog, JD 420U and a little 212 put put.

I hate to admit it but I am thinking of completly re-doing the other SA now. It sure is a ton of work to do it right though. I wasn't kidding about the $5000.00 bill. Thats probably about how much time I have in it at my pay rate. I don't think I would charge any less to do a first rate job like this one. And I'll have to muster up a good deal of determination before I'll even think about totally disassembling another running tractor and starting in on all the work.

Thanks Guys,

Yep a little one put. Just rebuilt it a little back but a friend of mind convinced me to let him do the cylinder hone (in my shop) and it was too much. Now it has some slap and needs to come back apart for another hone and a .020 piston or a knurl job (hate knurling pistons, a slop job at best). I knew it was too big before I put it back together but did it antway just to prove him wrong. Should never have trusted him and done it myself. Live and learn.

How's your tractor coming CNKS?

Slowly, if you can imagine about 5 times as many individual parts as your Super A. Tractor has no removable parts remaining on it -- that's where I am. Attempted to match PPG 71310 to CIH 2150, changed an orange and red toner, 10 more grams of the red, 10 less grams less of the orange, (in a pint) it is very close, still has an orange tint to it, but so did the 2150. It will be closer than the last tractor I painted.

10 more and 10 less still isn't enough in my opinion. I'm happy with the way this one turned out with the mix I used(cant remember but written on the reverse of the label) but if I do another, I'll probably ask for a 40 more, 40 less mix and see how that sprays out. The paint on this one is so close and about perfect in the correct light. I bet though if you took a fresh sprayed tractor from the late 50s and put it up against a PPG straight mix, in any light, you would see an orange tint from the PPG. Pint cans are very deceiving, spray it out on a 1 foot square piece and then judge it under different lighting conditions before you decide on the final mix. I'll probably do the other SA over but will wait on it until I hear about what mix you settled on. Maybe you'll be the one to end the mystery.

I did the test pieces. The 58 460 I'm working on actually came from the factory with IH 201 -- My PPG dealer's computer did not show any listing for that, so I settled on a 2150 equivalent. IH began using 2150 in 1961 when the 60 series was still in production. Case-IH 2150 does have an orange tint to it to my eyes, there will be those who say it doesn't. I had the dealer "digitally" photograph the 2150 sprayout, his camera or scanner or whatever PPG calls it did not even get close. So, as you did I juggled the toner ratios. I'm guessing that a 20 gram switch would be better than the 10 I used (my first try), but I looked at my test pieces in full sun, and really could not tell the difference from 2150, depending on how the light hit them -- it will have an orange tint to it, but to my eyes that is normal. It will not be nearly as orange as my last tractor, the mixer simply messed up. A 40 gram switch will be way too red, IMO. Problem is, there aren't any original tractors left, and I simply do not remember how dark the red was, although I drove an H (both original and repainted) for 10 years before I left home. I had a gallon mixed after I used up the pint, there is no difference that I can see -- the dealer was careful to get it the same. I did have one mix from the camera that could not be mixed in the pint size -- It was waaay off -- I have no confidence in the cameras ability to match colors, PPG only says it can do 80%, that really isn't very good. I would like to actually see your tractor, if you were 1000 miles closer.

CNKS,

I'm in Md., I know your in the midwest. I will get some pics up next week after the dust settles. Granted, pictures dont always tell an accurate story. I would also like to see more black or even blue in the mix to get to that deeper IH red tint and stay away from that fire engine red tint. I'm really going to drive those guys at PPG nuts next time. The reason PPGs camera didnt get close proably depended on what light they used to take the photo. Sounds like your (as usual) on the right track though.

I wouln't get rid of any of those tractors, you need them all. I have an A, B, C, 420S and a host of others. My two favorites are the A and the 420, both nice little tractors, the A of course lacks hydraulics, but I still find jobs for it.

Sounds like a beauty and actually not too bad on the cost. Where's the pictures? Like to see her. I'm just getting started on my 1948 SA. I plan to go through it completely as you did but I don't have any of the implement attachments. I'd like to mount a Woods belly mower on it -- have about 3 acres of wooded lawn to care for.

Sounds like a good deal as far as the parts price is concerned. Labor is always another story...

For comparison, I have around $4000 in my H with mounted belly mower, live hydraulics, and power steering. No paint yet and needs new tires.
