Necessity is the mother of invention

I am restoring the water pump on my Super H and made an interesting discovery. In the process of cleaning the pump body casting I came across what I though should be old grease in the threaded hole where the fitting for greasing the pump shaft resides. To my surprise the substance was impervious to solvents and very rubbery. It turned out to be chewing gum, still had the smell of spearmint. What I can't figure out is why Mr. Farmer stuck it in there. Maybe water that got past the first bushing was leaking out of the fitting??

Are you sure it was gum? What did it taste like?

I always store a little gum behind the grease zerks on the water pump. If you break down in the field, it gives you a little refreshment if you've run out of wheat or milo to chew.

And - he's a farmer. We all do stuff like that. Chewing gum, baling wire, welder, etc.

AHHH! I remember the day. I was on the East 15 when the hub started in howling. I thought I ran over a badger and he got stuck inbetween the wheels. I stopped; no badger. It was the fan hub (again) ERRRRGGG. The grease gun was in the shed the better part of 25 minutes away (walking) so lets see what can I use to squish the remaining grease into the bearing. Of course, my gum.
I never remembered to pull it out and grease the bearing, thanks in absentia for the rememberance.
The guy who did it.
