Shaggy's inspection cover is on the bottom of the "bellhousing" - front & center. Timing pointer should be underneath.

I was timing my dad's Super A and couldn't find timing marks, either. I used the method already mentioned where you remove the no. 1 spark plug and use your finger to feel for pressure.

When you find that timing mark on the flywheel
use some chalk to mark the timing mark. Hal
That flywheel may have this stamped into the metal.

This is what I do. Take out #1 plug and turn the engine over until you feel pressure and then watch to see the piston come up to the top and then take off the inspection cover (the round or oval one) and look and see if you can see the marks in the flywheel and see how they line up with the marker on the flat cover on the front of the bellhousing. Sometime you need to take a wire brush to the flywheel to clean the marks off. It works for me anyway. Shaggy

ok, but how do i tell if i have spark timing set corectly? im used to just taking a timing light and pointing it at the front crank and then twisting the distributer until i hit the mark. but theres not a mark on the front.

Use the timing light once you are close. Just aim it at the flywheel marks, instead of harmonic balancer.

If you havnt taken the magneto off, loosen the mag so you can turn it counter clockwise, so the top bakelite cover is closest to the block. Do everything that Shaggy told you to do, and then slowly rotate the mag clockwise until the impulse coupling clicks and then tighten it in that position. Thats it.

IH says to set the timing at TDC with the tractor not running.

You can do this easily by cranking slowly up to TDC stopping right on the mark. Adjust the point gap first. Then adjust the distributor so the points are just opening. The distributor shaft will turn a little against the advance springs so when you get it close, twist the rotor bug to see that the cam is just touching the rub block on the points.

Here"s the procedure to set static timing. Works on any engine with points (except magnetos).

1. If you"ve taken the distributor off, verify that the rotor points to #1 terminal when #1 cylinder is at TDC.

2. Set the point gap, as gap affects timing.

3. Set the distributor to the full retarded position (turn it to the end of the adjust range in the direction the rotor turns).

4. Crank the engine around until the timing marks line up (doesn"t matter whether or not #1 is on compression at this point). If you go past the timing mark, go all the way around again. This is to ensure that you"ve taken up any slack in the drive gears/chain so it doesn"t affect timing.

5. Connect a test light from the low (points) side of the coil to ground (a meter works also but a test light is easier). Leave the distributor cap off to make sure the engine can"t fire.

6. Turn on the ignition. The test light should be off (shorted to ground by the points).

7. Slowly turn the distributor in the advance (opposite the way the rotor turns) direction until the test light comes on, which indicates the points have opened.

8. Turn off the ignition & put it all back together.

This procedure is a lot more accurate than eyeballing the points to see when they open, and just as easy.

Keith
