ok, i recently took on a project. an H farmall that had the mag removed and worked on.. when it was put back on it would produce spark.. but backfired through the intake.. that told me the timing was 180 degrees off.. then the tractor sat for 7-9 years ,,, somewhere in there.. anyways i found the timing was indeed 180 degrees off but i cant get any spark out of it.. is there anything i can check on it?? or do i just need to throw it away and put a distributor on it? what are some things i can check?? i know im getting voltage to the magneto but other then that i dont know anything about them. Im only 19 and have lots to learn. basically all i mess with is diesels and a few gassers with distributors.

As the rest have said you never have voltage going into a mag. Every mag I rebuild has a paper in it that say I dont know what you know about mags but I have to asume you dont and never never hook up an external power source to a mag it will fry it internally the screw on the side is for a push pull type grounding switch only. . NOW you dont throw away a mag for a distributor either. Mags when rebuilt properly will give years of service without much matenence.and specially with a 6 volt starting system or crank start much better also. I can rebuild your mag for you for a bout the same price as a good distributor if you like just let me know. hope this helps JON

As Old said disconnect the wire from the mag. Putting voltage to the terminal may have already done dammage. The mag is grounded to stop at that terminal. If it still works (tooo COOOL) if not ther are gobs of information here on this site in the archives. Bob M and John T have posts (as well as others).
Purchase a repair manual and a automotive diagnosis and tuneup text book from the ninteen fifties. Then read it rather than 2 TV shows per week.
Ask us questions! we like it.

If it has a mag and has voltage going to it your already in trouble. Mags never should have voltage going to them they produce there over voltage.
