How far would you go for parts to finish a tractor? I was reading some recent posts about transporting costs and got to thinking about my one H. I went to the show in Portland Indiana and brought home a good set of shutters, on a trip to Oregon I brought home a set of front wheel weights, true I didn't make a special trip but included the parts during a trip. I have travelled many many miles for car parts when I was doing a '35 Ford..where do you draw the line...I always figured the "hobby " had to cost something....within two hours of home? overnight trip? freight vs travel?...Mike in Exeter Ontario

I've made a trip to Stollers just to get an oil cooler. That's a good 2 1/2 to 3 hours each way. I also went to an A/C salvage yard somewhere around congress for a peice for a 190 hydraulic pump. I was on my way home from work but I had to run across certain state routes in Ohio, that I'm not going to name, at extra-legal speeds that would NOT have been ignored had barney fife been out patrolling.

i RARELY make a special trip. if i can't find it close by(which is rare), i usually know someone heading in a certain direction or if i know i'll be going that way in a few months where i found it i'll make arrangments for it to be held. i limit my searches to a few states where i know people. my parents for example are in WI so if i find a "good deal" they go pick it up and store it for me till either i visit them or they visit me.

the solution is to admit that old tractors aint a hobby, there an obsession, and therefore there is no such thing as "to far" there is nothing like bringing dads or even grandads old tractor to back to like new condition and all the memories it made the first time around that go with it,of course any kid worth his salt just has to 1 up the old man, so then you need another tractor, and then another...

Because of the unique nature of Long Island, I have to travel a minimum of 4 hrs to clear NYC and get out to farm country. I have driven 8 to 9 hrs to pick up parts upstate NY. 5 to 6 hrs in Pa. Half the fun is seeing new places and meeting other folks who love old tractors. Geoff

There is a salvage yard 50 miles from me and I have him ship small parts UPS to save me a special trip. The location of the yard is not "on the way" anywhere for me.

Drive 4 to 6 hours to go to a decent show...

Once drove 8 hours one way to get a head for my W-9. Was the fourth one I had gotten, the first 3 were cracked.

As a general rule, probably not much more than 2 hours. Now, that doesn't include shows or swap meets that qualify as "vacations", but even then 3 to 4 hours is just about far enough.
