I just bought a SM that had been converted to 12 volt. It's got a single wire alternator, and outboard regulator on it. Something is bleeding the battery down...about 1 amp draw. Should the stop switch disconnect coil and charge circuit, or just coil? Thanks!!

What is generally considered a "one-wire alternator" DOES NOT have an external regulator.

You may be seeing the tractor's original voltage regulator for the generator, still installed, and used as a terminal board for some connections to the alternator. Or, it may be a non internally regulated alternator.

Are there any indentifying markings on the alternator or regulator, or even better, can you post a picture?

I think you need a diode that stops the back feeding to the alternator.Went to NAPA and got one.

If you can, insert an ammeter[10-0-10 or20-0-20 would be good] in the line which goes to the coil to check the draw after shutdown. If no reading is noted here, Insert the meter in the line to the alternator. By process of elimination, you can find the 1 amp draw. sounds like it may be one of the diodes in the alternator which is causing the problem.

sounds like an on-off switch is bad
