I was wondering, how can you tell the difference between a 6V and 12V generator? I also hear that you can convert a 6V to 12V. How do they do this and is it costly?
Thanks in advance

I converted my generator to 12v from a SW4 by changing the field coils and voltage regulator. Cost around 70.00 . My source is Triodiode you can search on ebay for them . They have a contact number and will help over the phone . This is a great parts source.

If it is an original unit from delco- Remy, it will have a small tag on it which will specify 6 or 12 volt. If it has been rebuilt, it may or may not have the tag on it. A starter- generator shop could probably convert a 6 volt to 12 volt, but would probably be expensive.

A 6volt can be made to put out 12v by replacing voltage regulator. Talk to a generator rebuild shop.
