My cousin has an International 574 that has had some brake problems. We have removed the master cylinders and equalizer at this point just to clean them up. Someone has bypassed the equalizer valve altogether. Although we have a kit to rebuild the equalizer, we received some advice yesterday from a former International Harvester parts guy that rebuilding the equalizer is a mistake and that we should just reassemble the system as it was. I should also say that the original tees that attached the equalizer to the rest of the system have been discarded at some point in the past, so we don't have those. I expect we would have to obtain those from somewhere if we ever want the equalizer to work correctly. Would anyone have any input into this situation? Thanks, Tim

The reason why the equalizer valve was bypassed was because it was leaking hydraulic oil, which lets air get into the brake system
This is because the brake pedal, shaft and bushings are worn, mostly the inner pedal.
Call me if you need more info.
I have done this work for 35 years, so if you need help call me. 304-358-7271

Hi TRC, may be the valve is worn and if you put a kit in it, it will leak by the spool. The TEE are available by an hydrolic shop. I've see many rebuilt valves leak, in the past, the solution, change the valve for a new or put two elbows. What's the problem with the brakes? Bernard le mécano Québec Canada

The right brake hasn't been working properly, but we now think that's internal (bad brake lining) rather than a problem with the equalizer. The owner of the tractor wanted to repair the equalizer, thinking that bypassing it was a bad thing. As it turns out, whoever bypassed the equalizer by using the elbows rather than tees knew what they were doing after all and there is no need to rebuild it. We'll need to take a look at that right brake lining next.

Hi TRC, the tractor brakes work good without the equaliser. If the O rings are bad, it have heavy duty O rings, from CASEIH. Bernard le mécano Québec Canada
