As I already noted below, the link is to a website domain that does in fact belong to International Truck and Engine Corporation. I've verified this through the domain registration information. The other domain (listed in the source code) is of a French? company that is collecting the information, probably for International and probably being paid by International to do so.

It's good to be concerned about these things, but the information you're giving out is no secret. When people start asking for passwords, credit card and bank info, etc, I worry, but this is the same type of info I give Valvoline to get oil rebates. Maybe it will be used for marketing, maybe not. Just how someone else is going to obtain your cap and sell it is a puzzle to me. Lotta work for $20 and you still got to sell the thing.

Those are my thoughts.....

Hey Doc, What the scam is . People are sending in serial #s to the gas cap deal for tractors they dont own and then they get the caps in the mail and they turn around and sell them on ebay for $20. to $30.00 a piece And as far as I know there is no limit to how many you can get. Last year someone from the cub board sent in there request and the received a message back saying that that serial # had already been used and could not get there caps. JON

To make scam worth the effort they would have to sell dozena of caps at $30 a pop and I would guess that whoever sends them out would question sending that many to one address.

Jon,

That may be. But you or I or anyone else can get valid serial numbers to the models in question in other ways, (like, look to the left!) all of them easier ...and what a lot of work for a $20 bill.....

I still don't see any evidence that the site listed above is not valid.....

Thanks for the link, I'll bookmark it for future problems with my TD6 magneto.

Thanks, Larry

Anyone have an e link to the LEGITIMATE distributor of these gas caps? I gave them two serial numbers this morning and as early in the game as it is (at this hour) I ought to be able to flag those numbers to the real distributor and head off the scam; if it is a scam. Plz post a link if anyone knows one. Thx, Joe Howard

See Ken's reply below and my response to it -- It may be legit, but I should have kept my typing fingers quiet -- Ken's response on the RPM site says that Navistar will continue this program until all serial numbers of the affected tractors are taken care of. I will say that if this is a scam it is the first one I ever thought was true.

Smells fishy to me, a scam to collect your personal information and serial numbers so they can get the free caps and put them up on Ebay. They can get $20+ a pop for a new cap on Ebay.

First off, "ihgascap.com" is a NEW thing... You have always had to send in a paper form. Why would this website suddenly pop up when the offer was ENDING???

Second, the IH logo belongs to Case New Holland, and CNH has nothing to do with this offer. Navistar doesn't have the right to use this logo as far as I know.

Third, why isn't it a page on their own website, navistar.com?

SCAM ALERT!!!!!! in reply to Nat 2, 03-13-2006 05:09:56
This is a fishing scam!!! If you do a root source on the gas cap page source it is from a server called "www.w3.org"

Neither Navistar or International truck & Engine are listed as "members" of this group!!!!

Beware!!!

Ken, you and Nat may be right, I never thought of it as a scam--just thought the "statute of limitations" was running out. I don't know if we can expect Navistar to do this forever. And, I had never heard of "International Truck and Engine". I got this off the RPM site, will look and see what the the people on the board there say. Since you have access to more info than the rest of us, can you check and see if this is legit? I had no intention of opening a can of worms or spam! But, I now wish I wasn't the 1st to reply to this.

I called the guy and believe me it's no scam, CNH is just the manufacturer of the caps, not the distributor of em, other companies are in charge of the distributing cause CNH wanted nothing to do with it, but they are required to replace em since the number of these tractors being used on and off the farm has increased since when they started proviving free caps, they are ending though so you better get em while you can. this wasn't started for the harry homeowner with a cub, it was started cause the caps were causing barn fires mainly, when lawsuits began over it they started willingly giving them out at their dealerships and it grew due to the number of tractors needing them, i got a few years ago and am still getting them now!!!!! !!!!! !!

What do you think the guy is going to say if you call him up and ask, "Is this a scam?" Of course he's going to say no!!!

CNH has NOTHING to do with the caps, manufacturing or distribution! Another telltale sign that this is a fishing scam. The gas cap liability stayed with the remaining piece of the original International Harvester Corporation, NAVISTAR, when they sold the farm equipment off to Tenneco in 1985.

I looked at the tag at the bottom of the Navistar web pages, and it does say, "International Truck and Engine Corporation," so this guy did his homework.

Interesting! I sent my serial number to this Warrenville outfit. Guess I'll look for my new cap on e-bay in about six weeks....
