I noticed that the TA on my SMTA worked when I pulled it when the tractor was cold but the tractor slowed down some as it warmed up. Does that mean the TA is "toast" and should be replaced?

I have been thinking about what you said in your post, I just need more info.

The TA will slow the tractor down when pulled back.
That is its job. Always move the lever with determination from direct, to TA, and from TA to direct.

If the Tractor pulls loads in TA, lever back,(a plow, or disk), or starts in 5th TA from a standing start without problems, and moves cleanly into direct when the handle is moved briskly forward, it is probably not bad.

All TAs need to be adjusted once in a while. The TA in our 350U is original and still operational 49 years old. (with high hours and max use plowing and working ground).

Buy a book (here on this site) to correctly adjust the linkage, it is way important.

Good luck,
JimN

Be careful when you say "slow down the tractor."

The TA will NOT slow the tractor down if you're going downhill!!!!! If you pull the TA, you're going for a ride, and you WILL need a new TA afterwards, if not an entire new tractor.

Pull the TA when you're running out of power. Idle back when you need to slow down, or shift to a lower gear.

NOTE: This only applies to mechanical TAs on SMTA, 300, 400, 350, 450, 340, 460, 560, 504, 606 544, 656 etc..
