I know I posted this in the general discussion forum but I wanted to post it here as well.

I have a 1963 International 504 Utility. This morning while driving down the driveway I could hear the engine missing. I tooled around a bit and put it back in the shop when I discovered a plug wire wa s loose. I fixed the plug wired and fired it up and of course now it didn't miss. As I took it for a spin I could hear a ticking noise now coming from the engine. Especially when it was under a load like taking off. It was much more faint when idling. What should I do? Any insight would be a great help. Thanks!!

Thanks for you input. I have a few more details now that I had time to dig in. First off the broom handle trick works great! You can sure hear what is going on in there. Anyway. I found the ticking noise to be coming from the front cyclinder. Then I found that my exhaust manifold seemed to be loose expecially the bolt by the noist cylinder. Put my hand up there and sure enough, exhaust leak. I tightened it down but I beleive the gasket (there is one there right?) is shot. I think it quieted the ticking some but I want to get a new gasket put on. Do you think that would make a ticking noise? Either way I need a new gasket. Anyone know where I can get one online? Our local Case IH dealer just closed its doors this spring. Thanks again and any more info from what I told you would be helpful. I will be in touch!!

Mark: Did you really cut off your Wife's broom handle? I have gotten the ocasional e mail from an irate wife, after giving such advice. Those handles work very well. A lot of guys actually have stethescopes for doing this kind of investigative work.

Getting back to your findings, I would suspect you may have a burnt vale as a result of that leaky gasket. I'd be tempted to do a compression test, to see if valve is sealing. I would almost bet the ticking is a valve. You can try adjusting valves, could be too wide settings and actual valve is fine. I wouldn't let this slide, get your gasket, try the compression test and set valves, you may just have caught it in time before burnt valves. Time will tell you that.

Had a F504 gas, 2 504d, and an I504 gas, These were all one owner tractors when I bought them. Also had a 105 combine and a 230 windrower, all with a 153 motor. The windrower, combine, and the I504 were all late versions of the 153 motor. The F504 was a 1962. There wew a couple of 93 combines in the area as well with the early build 153s. The early builds all ticked, and none gave trouble. The later motors were quiet. Much time and discussion was spent re these motors. They were tough and peooy, but like Hugh as previously stated, an old F300 would outdo a 504. And I still have a 300 while the last 504 has gone. None of the gas 504s were ever rebuilt; they were still good when replaced. QR..

Mark: The vet is right, play doctor, find out where this noise is coming from. If your screwdriver isn't long enough, cut the handle off your wife's broom. Stick one end up to your ear, and other end on tractor at different locations. With tractor running go over it, you'll soon find where the noise is coming from.

First off just where is this ticking noise comming from out of the exaust or valve cover or midway in the block or down in the oil pan area ? You need to refine the area of the tick as to corse of action to be taken . If it is comming out of the exhaust well then ya got and exhaust valve going to lunch and the head needs to come off and a valve job done then i would change the type of oil i was using and go with low ash 30 weight if it is comming from the valve cover area i would pull the valve cover and adjust the valves this is a tractor and needs and adjustment everyonce in awhile if it is comming from the middel to bottom then Huston You got a problem , could be broken ring wristpin starten to get loose or a rod bearing just starten to go bad . Go warm it up and listen to it and to narrow it down take a LONG wooden handeled screwdriver and hold it to your GOOD ear on the valve cover above each spark plug the down on the block then the pan under each plug your turn to play Doctor. and if the tractor slaps ya your playen doctor with the wrong tractor.
