The shaft is too short

I just bought a used 3pt finishing mower for my H. I got it home and hooked it up and the PTO shaft is about 6 to 8 inches short. I also have a pull behind brush hog that the shaft is too short also. On both the telescope comes apart and I need to add length to both. I do not have a welder and therefore was curious if there is another alternative. Is there an extender that I could buy to achieve this. Has anyone else experienced this? Thanks in advance.

New Idea use to have PTO extensions for their equipment.

Part No. 01197 HSA 1 1 3/8" spline
Part No. 01194 HSA 1 1 1/8" spline

Ask around. You might get lucky.

Some steel suppliers or welding/manufacturing shops carry what is called PTO square. If they have it they will carry both the male and the female ends. If you are a competent welder, you can get a longer female tube, or you can lengthen both depending on your situation. The tubes and square shafts are tight fits into the yolks on the ends. Just grind off the existing weld, get the old piece out and put the new longer one in. The new one should fit snug, then just weld it back up being careful to get the amount of welding close to the same on all sides to maintain balance. You will also need to get a longer shield for the PTO.

Is there any way that the 3 point arms can be shortened? Are they bolted together so that they could have the bolts taken out & new holes drilled? This would bring the mower closer to the tractor of course, so clearances would need to be checked.

Thanks for the response Ricedaddy but would a ORC and an adapter add the right amount of inches required instead of buying a whole new driveshaft for $120 each? I need to buy a ORC for safety reasons but what about an adaptor added to that. Thanks.

I would highly suggest to stay away from adding length built up from the ORC and an extention adpater. If you need an ORC that's a given. Each item is far from rigid and the off-center oscillation at the end of the adapter will put great strain on your tractor's PTO bearings. I have all the oscillation I want to see at just the end of the ORC. You will really have a problem when making turns as the front universal joint on the shaft is located far behind the tractor. I think the sound will scare you with all the chatter. Be safe and don't tear up something and just find the correct length proper shaft and you will never be sorry. Hal

you can do that, but you better be VERY good at welding, or get a pro as there's a lot of torque on a pto shaft
