I just purchased a 1955 300 utility. This is my first tractor that I have owned. It has a couple of problems and was looking for some help. I will list a few if anyone has any suggestions. There seems to be fluid always under the seat and the top of transfer case is wet with some type of fluid. The PTO wants to always be rotating slowly even with the lever disengaged. The steering is extremely hard to the right and once you crank it all the way it is very hard to steer back to center. And last the engine runs rough until very warm, would it be worth my time as a novice (who has rebuilt a few carbs about 28 yrs ago) to take the carb off and check the float, jets and clean? Thanks for the help.

Keep the tie rods and spindle shafts greased liberally, this aids steering ease. Also keep the front tires fully aired, and use ribbed tires, not snow tires off a pickup. This leaves less rubber contacting the ground and easing steering load.Put a spinner knob on the steering wheel and use it to rapidly steer the tractor once its moving at a decent crawl. If manual steering, make sure the box is full of lube,or else add a grease fitting and pump it full of chassis grease.Nice sticky grease (like Amalie Elixir) not grease that can leak out and run off.

One more thing.

Keep the complete steering system clean and greased.

"Why ruin an expensive piece of equipment over a dollars worth of grease."

First take a deep breath and dont try to do this all in one day.

Clean the tractor all over will let you get to know it.

Get the IT manual for instructions on adjusting pto.

Make sure the hydraulic vent under the seat is not plugged up. Should be a little cap on it.

The o-ring between hydo pump and engine may be letting engine oil and hydro fluid mix.

This tractor sounds like it was abused and not cared for. Clean everything, change all fluids(some $ here)

After you get it running put a can of DEEP CREEP in the gas to help clean carb and valve.

If you are lucky, with good care and a few hours of running you may have a descent tractor.

Just be careful with the steering. It does not take much stress on those fragile, high priced Utility pitman shafts to break a tooth. Air up your front tires, and don't try steering while stopped.

I'd start with a COMPLETE tune up. That is, plugs, wires, cap, rotor, points, condenser, clean carb, clean sediment bowl, engine oil, filter.

There is at least one bad gasket or O-ring in the hydraulics under the seat. That's what the fluid is.... Hydraulic oil. No way to know which one it is, really. Best to just do a complete go-through of the system.

PTO might just need a clutch adjustment. Get yourself the I&T shop manual for that tractor. It describes how to make the adjustments. Also adjust the clutch and TA while you're at it.
