I posted topic earlier but I apperantly put it in the wrong place. I've got a real delema, I'm woking on a 300U with a C169 engine. The man at the parts store told me he needed the number off the rear engine seal. When I told him it was a "rope" seal, he said if its not leaking don't touch it. Well it wasn't leaking but the advice was a little late. The gasket on the top half of the retainer is broken in several pieces and has to be replaced. Can I put the retainer back on and seal it with silicone? I cannot drop the oil pan because that is how I'm holding the back half of the engine. Can I get the the bottom half of the retainer off by removing the pan bolts below it? I think I could replace the pan gasket after the tractor is put back together. Any and all help would be greatly appriciated. I feel like a real dummy!!
Thanks Ed

I just rebuilt my c169. there is two long bolts, one in each side of the retainers that tighten them down around the crank. the bolts go through the bottom retainer and into the top one holding them together,so i don't think you can get either one off with out pulling the pan and i would be afraid of using a broken retainer because the bolts would not pull the 2 sides together which is how you get it to seal. The bolts i spoke of are about 2 inches long. I'm fairly sure you can not get to them with the pan on.hope this helps. can,t you support the engine with your engine hoist while you remove the pan and then block it back up for safety while you are under it.

Ed,
If it were mine...I would go ahead and do it right. There were 2 different types of seals...and you can't go by serial number.
I doubt if your plan will work. Go ahead and prop it up and pull the seal.
My 2 cents..... ...
