Would like to switch over my Farmall 1941 H to a 12 volt generator and regulator - I do not want to use an alternator as I would have to cut the hood. Having trouble locating a any used or rebuilt 12 volt Delco Remy generator that might work. Everything was set up for 12 volts when I got the tractor except the generator/regulator itself. Looking for help.

If you still have the 6 volt generator you can take it to a rebuild shop and get 12 volt field coils put in it.Just had it done and it only cost me 140 dollars a fair price for good work I think and it charges perfectly.River Bottom Farmer

Many (later)MDs, and 350Ds and other Diesels were Delco 12v pos ground systems. A 6v gen can be wound to 12v at a gen shop (call them first). Both Mitsubishi, and delco can be fit under the existing hood, search for pictures in the archives.
Good luck,

You don't have to cut the hood to make an alternater fit. but I have had good luck getting the old 6 volt generator to put out 12 volts. I have an H and an M both running that way.

How did you do that? Just change the regulator? I have heard that would burn up the generator. How long have you run it this way? I might consider this since I have no lights and I am running a magneto, so there would be no steady-state draw, just what is required to trickle-charge the battery from the initial start.

I did the same thing. The generator puts out volts. If you check it across the fields on the gen, before the regulator, it might be 20 + volts. Put a 12 volt regulator on it. You do need to reverse the polarity - the instructions come with the regulator. The starter will be fine.
