Past posts have asked about new ideas for faster internet for rural areas. This week AT&T announced a partnership with Dish network. Internet will be offered over the dish network, and speeds will be from 700k to 1.5.Mb per second. Much better than 28.8k!!
I have heard the costs will be between $49 and $79
per month. Keepin" an eye on it!!

Interesting to see if they have fast connnection upload and download. The last time they tried this (Echostar I think) it was fast download from the satellite, but the upload still went over the phone line. I am sure they have figured that out by now though as it was a couple years ago I checked into it.

Brent,

Naw, you're thinking of Direct TV.

Dish Network was in bed with Starband for a time but it has always been satellite link in both directions.

Thank you for that information. I will be watching, and I already have and am using the dish. Anything has to be better than dial-up.

Sounds about the same as hughes net. Lets see how much the dish and electronics are going to cost. I am game for a good one. JON

AT&T/Dish are going to use WildBlue as first vendor for their satellite broadband offering.
Odd that AT&T would make such an intelligent decision, but good for their Dish customers.

I have a friend in Ohio that just tried to sign up on wildblue. Tehy concentrate their coverage on the high poulation coasts, with no coverage in the central part of the ocuntry.

Do you lose the internet signal in a hard rain or snowfall like the TV does? that sucks!

Anything running over about six gig is going to wash out in heavy rain. At twelve or fourteen gig the wavelenth is shorter than the raindrops. Lots of RF going in the drain.

Yes, you do. Same technology, same drawbacks.
The trick with WildBlue is to see if a currently well running telecommunications startup company can successfully ramp up to support the business they've signed up for with Dish. I've seen companies run themselves into the ground in that situation more times than not.
