WHY DOES MY 1086 POP OUT OF REVERSE? THE LEVER IS STILL IN REVERSE, AND IF I PUST IT TOWARDS NEUTRAL IT SEEMS TO CATCH. IT DOESN'T DO IT ALL THE TIME. THANKS

HI; THANKS FOR THE MESSAGE. IF IT HAD A BAD THRUST WASHER, WOULD'NT IT DO IT ALL THE TIME? I WENT THROUGH THE SHIFT LINKAGE AND THE DETENT FEELS GOOD AND TIGHT LIKE NO SLOP ONCE ENGAGED INTO REVERSE. HOW HARD IS IT TO REPLACE THE THRUST WASHERS?
THANKS

P.S. I'M A RETRIRED FOREIGN AR MECHANIC

If you have to go in to replace the thrust washer the tractor needs to be split between the TA housing and the differential housing. With the side cover off to catch the parts on the shaft, the shaft is threaded and you can put a slide hammer on it, and pop it out easily. You would also want to check the shift coller and gear to make sure that they aren't wore to bad. There is also 2 different split gaskets so make sure that you would get the right one because that will make a difference on that shaft too. This problem doesn't happen every time you shift into reverse just when the gear happens to be in the right place. If you have any other Q's for me this week you can call me at work. There may be a thrust washer gone on the reverse shaft and the gear is floating back and forth. The easiest way to check this is to first, hope that you don't have the saddle tank, or you'll have to remove it to get to the side cover above the hitch pump off to see if thats what the gear is doing. To fix that you have to split the tractor to get the shaft out to put in the missing thrust washer. Thats what I've seen for this type of problem. The only other thing that could be is a detent roller gone in the shift coveror the lobes on the control shaft are wore badly and you have to remove the seat, shift linkage, and have the tool for removing and installing the cover to check for that. You can decide what you want to check first. Personally I'd go for the side cover first and if you have a side tank just run it down to towards empty so you don't have to be draining and pumping fuel.
