My mechanic told me to stay away from the old diesel Farmall tractors such as the MD, SMD and the 400 and 450 diesels necause he didn't think the injection pump parts are available. Is this true or are the parts available some place?

The tractor vet is right. you never open those little gas valves on a hot engine, they will warp. keep her on the diesel till you need to start her. mine will start straight on diesel with the starter, but thats only right after shut down.this will tell how good your engine is.

I don't know what's avalible and what's not for those old gas-start diesels, but I agree with your mechanic about staying away, unless you've got a ton of money to play with. Nothing can be taken for granted with those engines. Many were abused, the cylinder head was very prone to cracking if the engine was not allowed to cool down on gas before shutdown and not switched back over to diesel after shutdown to close the decompression valves. To me, they look like a pain to work on. If you're looking for a reliable working tractor and like M-450's, get a gasser. If you want a working diesel in that size range, get somthing like a 656, 666, or 686. If you've got the time and money to really fix one of those gas-start diesels up right, go for it. They're one of the neatest tractors ever built in my opinion.

K B that is a mith as when you switch over to gas for shut down they get hotter , you are far better off to let them cool down on diesel for 10-15 min at just over and ideal and this will bring down the engine temp far better then running it on gas . I have run many of the older gas start diesels for many years and was told this by more then one OLD I H mechanic . Now if ya think that i am kidding here just go and start up a diesel and let it idealfor awhile and see if you can put your hand on the exhaust manifold as it will be warm now start up a gasser and let it run for the same time and see if you can put your hand on it . The gasser will not even cool down at and ideal like a diesel will . I ran a 450 Diesel and a MD for years and worked the snot out of them and never had a problem with cracking a head or block . IF you are going to use one for farming the biggest thing to remember is that before going to the field is to make sure that the starting gas tank is full , allow warm up time , and try never to stall it while working if it does stall then get it fired back up as fast as you can as this is when the cylindre head temp climb and no coolant flow . after working all day allow at least 10-15 min. cool down and shut down on the diesel side . when i sold my 450 D back in 72 i told the guy that bought it how to do it and he sold it to another guy and explained it to him and he still has the tractor other then him rebuilding the injection pump one time it still runs as well as it did when i had it . I have try several times to buy it back even tryed trading him a 706 for it even up and he will not part with it , sayes that it does not use half the fuel as the newer tractor do and he is wright.

Tractor vet thanks for the vote of confidence on the old IH diesels. I think alot of the negative thoughts on these are because people don't understand them. I'am not a machanic but have farmed with them for years and got along fine. I will say if they are in good condition, in cold weather without engine heaters they were the only diesels that started back in the day. I have an MD, SMTAD,400 and 450D they are mostly just for play know but still get used to mow and rake hay. They have a sound all their own. There is Central Fuel Injection Service Co. in Esterville Iowa that works on these pumps and has exchange pumps. Phone 712 362 4200
