Farmall 656 brakes---HELP!

I was replacing the brakes on my neighbor's 656 last night and ran into an unusual problem. After I cleaned all the wear surfaces and installed new actuator balls and new brake discs I am not able to install the outside cover because the combined thickness or the discs and actuator is so much that I lack approx. 3/8 inch of being able to bolt the cover on flush. I'm stumped! I've done this many times on older disc brake tractors (Super M thru 560) and never had trouble like this. Anyone have any ideas?

you need to install shims that go against the flat plate

thanks guys, I was talking with another neighbor who had a 656, and he told me the same thing. I guess I'll tell the owner to get the shims. That was the first 656 I've ever worked on, but you can be sure i'll remember. Thanks again!

Yep,

Somebody has pulled the shims to extend the life of the old brakes (normal procedure). Think there should be like something like five .030" shimes on each side with new discs.
