Was using the "ole 560" yesterday to pull a log out of the woods. I lifted the log with the 3pt hitch and dragged it out, dropped it in place and went to lift the other end of the log to block it.

All went well the 3pt worked fine but when I went to go forward the tractor would not move. It now is stuck in (what I beleive is) 3rd gear. When I let out the clutch it kills the engine. The engine starts and runs fine but no movement, and I can't get into any other gear, I fact the shft lever will not move.

I tried to pull with the bobcat but only broke the chain. Seems frozen all of a sudden. Any Ideas on what might be wrong and how to fix it.

Any help is appreciated- Thanks

Yep, worn shifter, stuck in two gears. I would bet a million dollars that your clutch and TA linkages are also out of adjustment, which makes shifting hard and causes the worn shifter to act up. Get yourself an I&T manual and adjust the clutch/TA linkage EXACTLY as the book shows. Weld up the end of the shifter and grind to shape. Will shift like a new one.

Ditto wot the other guys said! 'cept the shifter does not have to be worn for this to happen. It was/is a common ailment with the 560

Your 560 is very likely suffering from the common Red Iron ailment of a worn shift lever.

To make sure, take out the three cap screws at the bottom of the shifter tower and lift the shifter out. What you will see are three shift rails, (approx 3/8 wide) and two dividers (approx 1/16 inch wide) with about a 5/8 slot in them. To have the transmission in neutral, all the slots must line up. With the shifter or a large screwdriver or other pry bar move the rails until the notches line up with the dividers. You may need to depress the clutch, pull the TA lever, and rock the tractor back and forth to accomplish this.

After aligning them, you can put the shifter back in (make sure that the bottom of the shifter lever goes into a notch. BUT before you do this, take a good look at the bottom of the shifter and determine how much it is worn. I usually build mine up plenty, then grind them back down until they just barely fit and work, that way it will be a long time until this problem occurs again.

It is in two gears at the same time. If it can be pushed (by hand forward and back rather violently, while the clutch is down, and the shifter is being pushed toward neutral, it should come out of third. It will not be fixed though. It will need the shifter removed and the shift rails in the trans moved to alignment (one will be out of place with the others. Then the tip of the lever needs to be welded back up and ground down to fit snugly in the rails. Good luck, sometimes they are badley wedged in two gears and need to have the top of the tranny lifted to force them into neutral.

ITS LOCKED IN TWO GEARS, TAKE THE THREE BOLTS OUT THAT HOLD THE SHIFTER AND WITH A BIG SCREWDRIVER
LINE UP THE SHIFTING FORKS.
