IH 584 Starter Grinding

My father just spent a load of dough on his clean old 584. A couple of years ago, the mechanic reversed the starter ring on the flywheel while he had the tractor split and the starter bendix has progressively worsened in meshing with the flywheel gear. It will often grind loudly a couple of times before meshing and then starting. He again had mechanic split tractor and placed new flywheel ring and problem is better, but still happens. The mechanic said bendix gears good, and Dad said they looked new to him also. Any ideas from the forum? Hate to keep replacing expensive parts on limited funds.
Thanks .

Tony

My 684 would grind like that and it was the terminal that connects to the starter bendix.I put a new end on it and it works ok now.

Thanks for the idea. My dad found his crimped connection to be a bit loose and tightened it and the starter seems to be working fine now. Time will tell. The starter people said that sometimes the safety switch also would reduce the proper 12v to the starter and cause this problem. Dad found the terminal connector suspicious and started there. A 500 dollar loose connection..... ..

Possibly the starter solenoid is not throwing the bendix out far enough to provide complete engagement with the flywheel ring? Or, maybe if the starter bendix was replace at some time the spacers were re-installed in the proper position, which would also prevent the bendix from making full engagement.

Good thoughts and thanks for the time and effort. I didn"t see any shim or gasket or spacer between the starter and the engine case, but didn"t check bendix. I guess I"ll pull starter off and take a look for myself. Three bolts and it is off, I think. Anything else to look for while doing it?
