Need to replace leaking seal on this older tractor. I have never torn this machine down so looking for lessons learned.
Thanks!

I tried the drill method on the original seal with no luck. The orginal seal is built like a sherman tank, about 3-4 times thicker than the new thin ones. I ended up taking the PTO off and pressing the old one out. After doing this I don"t believe the drill method could possibly work without messing something up. I put in to 2 of the thin seals (~ $10.00 a piece at Napa) and it works great.

I have pictures of the PTO removal process if anyone is interested.

I've done Super A and C, which would be same as a 140. I've taken the PTO unit off to do it. If it is a late model 140 with the newer thin seal, the trick of drilling and pulling may work. However if it's the old type thick seal, it's going to be really hard to get out that way. If you remove the pto unit, you must use a puller to get the gear off the shaft as the woodruff key prevents driving the shaft out. The key will catch on the bearing race. Once the gear is out, it's pretty easy, the shaft will come right out toward the outside, and the bearings come out easily as i recall. Then you can just drive or press out the old seal and press in the new one. Also, I believe you have to remove the shifter mechanism. It's a pain, but removing the pto unit I belive is more likely to result in a good job. If you need a gasket for the PTO unit, send me an E mail. I have some NOS gaskets.

Mornin Shep, I believe its similar to the one on my Super A. I found it to be a real pain in the a$$. I ended taking the PTO unit off the tractor and pulling the large drive gear off the inside to get that darn thing out. I tried your method and it didnt work. No rocket science just a pain.

Rvw of the archives looks like just drill 2 small holes in seal, pry out and drive new one back in place. Any other tricks?
