Paper gasket or RTV?

I am rebuilding a 1929 Regular and am finding old very thin paper gaskets everywhere. Should I replace them with new paper gaskets, or can I use RTV silicon without a gasket? Using RTV will make it easier to reassemble without having to cut custom gaskets for the tranny, rear end, drop boxes, and some engine stuff. Of course, the head gasket and manifold gasket will have to be used in their original form.

If I go with another gasket, what material would be best, and would the thickness be critical? On my F-20 I used something that was made from vegetable fiber. They said it is good for gas, oil & moderately high temperature.

I like RTV. Sometimes it is a judgment call. Sometimes I use gas and oil resistant gasket material. Sometimes paper...sometimes RTV and sometimes both depending on just what I am doing. I also think that IH would have used RTV if it were available in 1929....

If you want to use the thin paper Fel-ProŽ Karropak makes a roll 1/64 thick. It's just like those thin gaskets. A lot of auto parts places have it but they don't always know. Since nobody much uses it it's often old stock & doesn't show right in their computer. I went to the back in 3 places that didn't really know what they had before I fount a thin roll. It was at an Auto Zone. mm

I see nothing wrong with using the RTV. Just use it in the proper amount so you get a good seal and don't have excess that will interfere with things on the inside. I'm kinda thinking that if RTV had been available back in 1929 the boys at IHC just might have used it instead of the paper gaskets.
