Hi I am working on that early 39 M and have a problem with my boster and need to try to fix it some how. Out of the 8 mounting holes used to bolt to the frame rails 5 have been drilled and taped out to 3/4 inch instaid of 5/8. I want to fix this and looking for ideas. Have thought maybe helicoils? or have thought about cutting off a bolt flush and trying to drill and tap that. Also thought about welding them shut and redrilling and taping but scared of that. Any one have any ideas on what might work out best? Thanks Paul

there is probably no easy fix for this short of opening the frame rails to accept 3/4 bolts or finding a new casting but there are self locking thread forms available that you might research.

you basically need to open up the 3/4 tapped holes beyond 3/4 in order to make room for special inserts that could be tapped internal for 5/8. Machine shop services would be required to make these special inserts. I've not researched this thoroughly but it seems you might go with 1 inch external straight thread insert with 5/8 internal thread to accept the frame bolts. Bolster casting would be drilled and tapped for self locking internal thread to accept the inserts.

What about the rails? Holes are larger also?
maybe that is why they went with larger bolts to begin with. Explain the issue you have with it as is.

Helicoils will give you an odd size.

I would take the bolts to a machine shop and have the heads cut down to match 5/8 bolts if I was worried about appearance.

The next best option is to buy a salvage bolster.

This is a used boster I found, 39 are different from others and hard to find being they are smooth on the front. My frame rails have not been opened up and the original boster was gone so really want to find a way to fix this one. Paul

Paul,
I need your assistance. I recently purchased what appears to be a 1939 H that went through our spring grass fires. It has the slot top trans cover and the correct seat, but a later pto. This seems like a pretty difficult change just to get a 1-3/8 pto, so I don't know what the deal is. Serial number plate melted in the fire, but engine number is 10066 which makes it a late '39 (changeover is 10600 according to my records). What I am trying to do is identify what parts are unique to the '39's. I wasn't aware of the bolster. Could you send me a photo or a better description so I can determine if I have the correct bolster? Thanks.

Helicoil or Lock-N-Stitch are two types of thread repair inserts. I like the Lock-N-Stitch but they are expensive. Do not weld the holes shut unless you can control the cooldown process. Cast iron is high carbon and will become harder than the hubs of he|| if allowed to cool too quickly.
